What will increase perfomance for FSX???

Thread Starter
I would like to get better performance out of FSX. I have read different places where a faster CPU would help more vs. a better GPU. I have also read the opposite. I would like to know what you guys think. Would I get a noticeable performance gain if I overclock to say 3ghz or would it be better to upgrade my GPU or go SLI.

Thank You,

I would get 4 GBs of RAM, first. If that doesn't help, overclock to 3 GHz+. If it's still laggy, THEN maybe a new card, but the 8800GT is a VERY good card, it shouldn't be the thing holding you back.

As far as 4GB RAM I am running 32bit XP is that going to be a problem. Also, would it be ok to do 4x1 or should I get 2x2?? Would be cheaper of course just to get 2 more 1gb sticks. I am a cheap bastard hehehe

Thanks for the help!!!

You know, I think trying to run FSX smoothly at the highest settings is like trying to get Crysis maxed out .. lol

Even in my rig with Crossfire, it gets kinda choppy (my guess around 20fps) at the highest settings ...

Ahh, the joys of XP...

Well then, I would start by OCing your CPU. Vista will take a tiny bit of performance away again (more than made for by upgrading RAM) but 64-bit XP sucks, and 64-bit Vista is fine. So ya, I would overclock the CPU first. You will eventually need Vista anyway, so it may be time to upgrade to 64-bit, and 4 GBs of RAM, if you can stomach the money involved. And I would get a 2 x 2 GB kit, since newer Ballistix don't use as good of RAM Modules, thus they won't OC as high, and people (myself included) have been having newer Ballistix die on them. Thus, it's be a better bet to upgrade to a 2 x 2 GB kit and Vista, if that's something that you could handle doing.

But, like I said, OC first, ask questions later.

Overclock that Q6600 to 3.6GHz and you will see a huge jump in performance. FSX is like almost all processor once you have a good GPU (which you do.)

Eventually need Vista? I think not. I suggest sticking with XP until Windows seven is out next year as you shouldn't need more than 2GB for FSX on XP. Vista would also suck up more CPU power if you were to switch to it.

FSX is actually harder to max out than Crysis.

I don't think its either GPU or CPU intensive, but needs both components to be powerful enough.

I have not played FSX in over a year. So this info may be dated. Have you upgraded to FSX SP1? That should help things out a lot. As it stood one year ago, with FSX, upgrading the video card from what you have will not show major gains. Same with memory. If you up the memory, you will see faster load times, but no gain in frame rates. Overclock you CPU, patch the game, and go to www.flightsim.com. There is a lot of help over there.

Lastly, with my sig rig, I got great frame rates (35+) with everything maxed, but no autogen. Autogen destroys frame rates. Try maxing everything and turning autogen off.
