Windows product key question

Thread Starter
I have a Windows XP Home Edition CD and its own product key. A couple of days ago, my neighbor threw their computer away so I took it. On the broken computer (blew up PSU, dead hard drive and fried motherboard), there is a XP Home product key taped on the side of the computer.

With that product key from my 'new' computer, am I allow to use it with my current Windows CD, which already has its own product key?

Technically no.

Edit: Actually if it was a retail key, yes. But if it was an OEM key no. If that PC was a branded more than likely it was oem.

as long as the disc and the sticker are the same version, for example home oem then they would work together, but you can not legally use the licence on anything other than the dead computer
