Quad Cores + Zalman 9700[NT] - Page 3

Also remmber guys some chips just wanna run hotter then others i dont use a zalman 9700 but with my old quad at 3400@1.41 vcore i loaded at low 50s in folding and never passed 62c in prime95. But with the cpu i traded for a low vid one 1.2 running 3600@1.31 i fold at 52-59c and prime95 up to around 65c and i remounted it like 20 times.

Zalman at full is LOUD; plus the friggin thing is expensive, I keep it on the lowest with my quad at 3.0 and its around 32 idle during summer. Dunno about full load on summer, haven't tried yet =)

You'd be much better off with a OCZ Vendetta 2

Not really

heres why

1. I like the look of the Zalman 9700NT
2. It seems to cool as much as i need
3. I have already bought a Zalman 9700NT
4. I dont have the extra money to buy a vendetta 2

and most importantly

5. I do not want a Vendetta 2

Note: Sorry about all these random threads im making lately!

Birthday in a Month, dad wants to know what i wanna get so he can get it ordered and out the way, just decidin on the stuffs

I'm using a Zalman 9700 with my QX9650 Extreme @3.8Ghz (420x9). Idle is around 33-34c depending on ambient. Blend tests in prime95 load it up to around 62-65c, spiking to 70c on core 0 (that's using realtemp with the TjMax set to 95c, which I believe is correct for a 45nm quad)

3.8Ghz is about as far as I dare push with my current cooling (i.e. the Zalman). Vcore is set at 1.30v in the BIOS (1.2v in cpuz) and to push for 4Ghz I would need to up the voltage to the point where the Zalman wouldn't be able to cope.

So yeah, the Zalman is ok for moderate OCing. I'm thinking of moving to water

EDIT: 33/34 idle was at stock. Idle at 3.8Ghz stable is around 47c

Perhaps there's some sort of command to dump it into the ram vs. the L2 cache...perhaps I'll read up on that. All is starting to make sense!
Yes... An FFT is a Fast Fourier Transformation, so calculating one of these requires very long operations that recurse a lot... so for a large FFT (the one that stresses the RAM) you can probably see how long and complex they are...

Thanks for the help guys n gals

The Zalman seems to do alright with 45nm Quads

Cheers

Wow, nice vcore. The lowest I can go is 1.328v (ran for 11hours in prime), but I run it at 1.336v just in case.

I've remounted a couple times and used a couple different thermal compounds. Right now, I'm using MX-2 and my maximum temperature on load (Small FFTs) hit up to 65C. What sucks is that my core never went past that point even before I started messing around with the seating. So, I guess I'm back where I started.
