Ive got 3 hardrives in my pc right now

250 sata II western digital
160Gb sata II western digital
both are on vista
then i have a 40gb IDE maxtor for xp ( to test bioshock)

but when the pc turns on after installing xp , the list that comes up to select the os has 2 options XP Pro ( works to boot to xp ) and XP Pro ( dosent work)
vista is not there... so in order to boot to vista i have to use my retail dvd and hit repair ... which is a nuisance

anyone have any suggestions?

Well you can change the boot order in the BIOS to see if it will boot to the hdd that contains Vista. Hope that helps.

You can fix your boot loader with EasyBCD.

Check the pins on the drives and change to "Cable Select"

I've actually run into the same thing only under different circumstances.

I have Vista installed on my 80GB SATAII drive, XP installed on the main partition of a 40GB ATA drive (both with updates, applications installed, etc) and another, trial installation of XP simply for tinkering purposes with nothing else done to it on a small partition on the same hard drive.

C: Vista
D: XP
E: XP trial

***Bold indicates the same physical hard disk drive.

Vista has completely disappeared from my options to choose which one to boot and only the two XP options are listed.

EasyBCD shows Vista as my default and the original, configured to my liking XP as the alternate. No mention of the tinkering version of XP.

Any suggestions?

Should I start from scratch on the boot loader or does this have something to do with two OS's on one hard drive but in different partitions?

***EDIT***
Ok, so I removed all entries, entered ONLY Vista and when I reboot it still only shows the two XP entries.

***EDIT***
Well now things are really screwy. I deleted the partition that had the tweaking version of XP on it, redistributed the unallocated space and now XP loads all by itself as if Vista was never there. What's weird as well is that when I check in EasyBCD it shows the drive for Vista as being U: but it's installed on my D: drive.

At least I'm not PC-less but it's really annoying since I bought Vista to use Vista and now I can't even get into it.

Here's what's show in the boot loader:

There are a total of 2 entries listed in the Vista Bootloader.
Bootloader Timeout: 5 seconds.
Default OS: Microsoft Windows Vista

Entry #1

Name: Microsoft Windows Vista
BCD ID: {default}
Drive: D:\\
Bootloader Path: \\Windows\\system32\\winload.exe
Windows Directory: \\Windows

Entry #2

Name: Microsoft Windows XP
BCD ID: {6c8ecf5d-334c-11dd-a0d3-0018f3fb14cd}
Drive: C:\\
Bootloader Path: \\NTLDR

And here's what's found in the details (debug):

***EDIT***
Duh, use EasyBCD to reinstall the Vista boot loader.

I need to think these things through before considering it a lost cause.
