[HH]AMD Announces External Graphics for Notebooks - Page 2

it's PCI-e 2.0 though, and they said 4GB/s on the PCIe bus so i think that means a PCI-e 8x 2.0. Express slot tech only gives you pci-e 1x 1.0 so i think this is new.

Question: Will these hook up to any laptop with a PCI-e mobo, or do you need some special, external PCI-e port of some sort?
From what i understood from the article, its an external connector to be built on new laptops, which makes the PCI-E port external, so you can add a card from the outside not connect it inside the laptop. This connector can also act as a USB hub, as they gave it USB capabilities over the PCI-E connector capabilities as well.

I'd like to see them take this one step further. How about an external enclosure with this type of connection that will accept any PCI-e card? Like an external hdd enclosure, but for a vid card. Now that would be sweet.

Agreed, I'd pick one up faster than you could say "Windows Vista Wouldn't Support It Correctly For A Year" ten times fast

How many lanes is 4.0GB/s equivalent to in terms of PCI-E 2.0? And where exactly is this going to hook up to on laptops? It seems to me it would have to be a special port on laptops.

The ASUS solution runs on PCI-E x1, so it's pretty worthless.

They need to make a version with 8 PCIe 2.0 x16 slots, so desktop users could also use such a device for octa-crossfire!

I think this would be the next logical step. You buy a laptop with a Turion X2 Ultra, you get this nice box thing that plugs into a special PCIe connector on the side of the laptop, and inside the box is a single PCIe slot for you to put the graphics card of your choosing.

Exactly. It would sell like hotcakes!

Each PCI-e lane is 250mb/s so its 1 x16 slot... or 2 x8 slots.
