Also, does running at a higher temperature degrade the chip faster, or is longevity not really an issue if you run it within the specifications?

60 and under should not affect the longeivity of the chip. If you get to higher temps, then yes it would. Also, remember the voltage threshold for these to not cause damage is 1.362 i believe, (rpm posted a link). This is why i suggested staying below 1.35 to be safe if you can.

lol

EDIT***Morons like me will run it well over 1.4-1.8vCore in hopes of beating the world record 4.3GHz mark...but I'll only do that on Payday AND if Fry's has another one in stock lol***

1.8V? Liquid nitrogen? haha, good luck with that one

It's fine to run the Q9450 at 1.45v or below. Heck I have done suicide runs on 1.55v. It's not going to kill or degrade the CPU any time soon, despite what others will have you believe. As of yet, there really are no cases of any 45nm quads dying or degrading from voltage (within reason).

Mind you, they do have a short burn in period (~1 week) when you first start using one, and after that time, the voltage required to stay stable will increase a tad, but after that, it will sit like a rock.

Another question: What is the best utility to use for monitoring the temperature?

I have the Mobo utility that came with my ASUS board, but it lists the CPU temp at 26c.

However, I downloaded CoreTemp just a min ago and it's listing the temperatures at 50c.

Take care with that voltage.

The rating is: 0.85V – 1.3625V

My wife wont let me play with that anymore, poor cat...

But on a better note I did buy a 8000 BTU window A/C unit that I "accidentally" opened it up and removed the compressor and began building my own little super cooler. Purely by accident.

RealTemp for 45nm - CoreTemp is 10C higher. You're actually running at 40C instead of 50C.
