Second hard drive won't work on Vista

Thread Starter
I'm not sure why, but when I installed the second hard drive an icon poped up saying “installing hardware” and then disappeared. The second hard drive appears in the device manager, however is not accessible under “my computer” and there is no paths to it that I could find.

Maybe I need to format it first? If so how do I do that in Vista, it says under the device manager it isnt formatted.

This is what is says under device manager:

Type: Unknown
Status: Not initalized
Partition Style: Not Applicable

While I did think of a few possible solutions like loading the windows disc and formatting it, im very weary because I do not wan't to lose any of the data on my primary hard drive, as I have done in the past due to my tinkering.

You most likely need to format it. Try right clicking on My COmputer and go to manage. Then go to disk management, and see if it shows up in the list towards the bottom. If it does, simply right click to format and then make it a new simple volume and you should be set. Hopefully this helps.

I set the jumpers like it said to, to make it a slave, I just forgot to format in management console...I actually forgot about management console because I so rarely use it.
