Overclocking, helpful words needed

Ok, so I have my E6300 running at this

My Question to you is this. Its a fairly old chip, but its still giving all its got, I find that taking it above this current speed (give or take a few mhz on the fsb) I get BSOD's. I am 90% sure that its the ram, as when I have been experimenting with the BIOS options and I found 'FSB Strap to Northbridge' I set this to 400mhz, which was the highest option it gave me, booted and it had reduced the ram clock on the bios loading screen thingy, that you see when you turn your pc on.

So with the settings like that, i got into windows @ 450FSB which gave me 3.15ghz. But it BSOD'd on load, which I thought was odd.

So, do I just give up, and that the limit for my system, or;
1. Replace my ram Slightly aging PC-5300

2. Newer CPU, with a higher multi (nothing fancy, on a tight budget)

3. Give UP

any comments would be great. Cheers in advance

btw: Asus P5k Pro P35 is the mobo in the rig.

NEVER GIVE UP!!!

I would try some new RAM definitely also leave them unlinked or unstrapped or w/e if you can I find I can increase my OC by at least 10% if I set my own speed of RAM

Is that possible on a P35 chipset? I cant find any overclocking guides for the P5K Pro, I used to be able to set my own ram speed on the 650i, but I cant find the way how to on this one

I dunno too much about that board but if not does it have a setting for the RAM dividers you change change? if so try changing them to lower it

Setting it manually is an nforce speciality. the p35 is an intel chipset, typically great overclockers, but can only run ram at dividers. The best you'll be able to do is set it to a 1:1 divider (meaning your ram is going to run at your FSB speed) and shoot for the best. Your ram probably is holding you back though, and eventually you'll want to get some faster memory.

I thought asmuch, Is it worth going for PC2-6400 or 8500?

PC2-8500 would get me to 533 MHz FSB at 1:1 before even going past the RAM's specsed speed. I like the sound of 3.7ghz

If you can find some decently priced PC2-8500, it's worth a shot. Personally though I'd get some good PC2-6400. Even the low end stuff will OC a little bit. Personally I'm running 8500, and there doesn't seem to be a real difference in speed between it and the 6400, except I can run the 1066 at a higher divider.

Little update, I didnt give up, and I got this, after putting a 'fair' ammount of voltage through EVERYTHING

:O clicky

Not sure how much further it will go, orthos fails, but its user stable, so
