[Fud] Intel won't let Nvidia support Nehalem - Page 6

trust me, there will be nehalem + sli. It really comes down to who gives first; Neither party stands to win- Intel doesn't want people to switch to AMD processors, and the CERTAINLY don't want the only option for their boards to be ATI. Nvidia would pretty much lose the high-end enthusiast market. Even those of us who never go two cards like the POSSIBLILITY- I mean, sli is pretty much the only reason to get a nvidia chipset right now- Intel is cheaper and better in most cases!

I think if you polled on this site, you'd find far more Intel Chipsets than Nvidia chipsets. Intel wouldn't lose too much of the enthusiast market since SLI is a smaller pie, you could still use Nvidia's high end single slot card on the Intel chipset. The problem will be that Nvidia (and AMD/ATI for that matter) have really started trying to push the multi slot solutions as the high end and the big equation here is.

If Intel doesn't get SLI, Nvidia doesn't get Nehalem
Intel doesn't lose anything as Intel currently doesn't have SLI and that hasn't stopped people from buying piles of Intel Chipsets. Nvidia loses bundles of money as people migrate to Nehalem and there are no Nvidia chipsets to support them.
AMD/ATI on the other hand sees the crossfire market expanding as people migrate from Nvidia SLI to Crossfire, OR their Chipset sales expand as people migrate from Nvidia chipsets to AMD chipsets, and Intel may lose some chipset business from that migration, but probably not tons.

If Intel gets SLI, Nvidia gets Nehalem.
Intel gains the small market for SLI, which might even grow as the Intel chipset market may drive up SLI sales. Nvidia gains on that SLI market area, but will probably lose substantial parts of their Chipset business UNLESS Nvidia finally sinks some decent R&D money into their chipsets and makes them comparable or at least competitive to Intel and AMD's chipsets.
AMD/ATI will see a drop in Crossfire market as some people move over to SLI, and potentially a drop in chipset business as well, depending on how well they are able to compete with Intel's chipset/CPU's.

I blame nvidia for not letting intel chipsets to go sli so intel said well we dont need you ati has some great gpu's as well. i just wanna see how this blows over.

Edit : as Rpijg has said. i agree.

Would really want to see the outcome of this.

Also.. how big is chance that Intel buys AMD/ATI ? So Intel has their paw in GPU market too.

I don't think this would really hurt Nvidia that much. Not having sli isn't a big downfall when this upcoming 9900gtx(whatever it is) is supposed to crush the competition and you can buy dual single slot cards(gx2).

It would probably be an extremely low chance because I believe they would have to go through a very lengthy anti-monopoly process in multiple countries.

While it does seem odd that the only multicard solution Intel boards allow for is their direct competitor's, in the short term it does kind of make sense. Right now, I think Intel sees Nvidia as a bigger threat than AMD. Nvidia keeps talking up their whole CUDA/GPGPU thing and how GPU-accelerated tasks eliminate or reduce the need for a high-power CPU. If the whole GPGPU thing gets off the ground for Nvidia, Intel could potentially sell less high-end CPUs and lose money. On the other hand with AMD, Intel is about to launch Nehalem and AMD doesn't currently have a direct answer to that so they don't have to worry about AMD overtaking them in performance soon. So for now I think Intel that can afford AMD/ATI to gain ground in the GPU market until Intel has an answer for Nvidia's CUDA and GPGPU strategy (perhaps in the form of Larrabee)
