Crappy performance after updating drivers

Thread Starter
I downloaded the 175.16 nvidia driver for my 8800 gts and did a perfectly clean install (uninstalling in safe mode and all that jazz). The driver appeared to be working perfectly. I turn off my computer for the night and when I turned it back on in the morning things started performing terribly. iTunes songs skip like hell and all new games get crappy performance. I have tried going back to an old driver but the same thing happens when I turn my computer on after a shutdown. It may be a confliction with my CPU(overclocked) or the drivers may be corrupted by something.
Any thoughts?

Roll back to the last drivers you were using and see if you still have issues just to be 100% sure it's the new drivers and not anything else.

I have tried using the 175.12 driver as well as several WHQL ones. From what i can guess the driver seems to be conflicting with my cpu but it still says the video card is performing normally in device manager.

Ok, I have few different things to try. I have always been using driver cleaner but I have always run it before removing old drivers. Also, Vista automatically installs default drivers even with automatic updates off and internet unplugged; the generic driver might be conflicting with my new ones. Does anyone know if an overclocked cpu might conflict with drivers?

Use a old driver, the 8800 GT vs the FX5500 and 6200 is different of course, but i notice with both of those cards i get very very bad performance in games, etc. So i just use the 81.98 for them. So maybe you should try using an old driver.

And about overclocking your CPU. That may be a problem, i am sure it adds extra stress to everything.

After I finish uninstalling the old drivers and running driver cleaner the computer restarts as normal. When it boots up again it says installing new drivers and then the standard vga driver is installed. There is no way for me to stop this from auto-installing. Could this be interfering with the new drivers?

ok some new progress.
i recently updated my subscription to pc-cillin 2007 and it seems that if I disable the firewall and reboot the computer the problem goes away. I suspect that the new version has some issues with my video card or drivers.
