[Wired] In-Game ads for PS3

This morning Sony announced their intention to allow third-party companies to bring dynamic, in-game advertisements to the PlayStation 3 console.

Additionally, Sony has revealed "leading independent dynamic in-game advertising network" IGA Worldwide as the first group given permission to inject ads into PlayStation 3 games.

"The PS3 platform is primed to leverage the high growth potential of the in-game advertising market," said Sony Computer Entertainment America senior vice president Phil Rosenberg. "Ads that are organic to the environment not only benefit developers and advertisers, but also create a richer experience for gamers."

No word on when these in-game ads will start popping up in your PS3 games, but expect them very soon.

If I pay $60 for a game, I should not see in-game advertising...period.

I dont really care. As long as they are not pop-up adds that block the screen, then I am cool. It makes the game more realistic in city enviorments.

They've been putting adverts in games for a while now... I mean half the bilboards in the last couple of Need for Speed games have been adverts. I think its absolute crap, that we shell out good money, and have to look at branded materials.

Yeah because I don't give them enough money already.

I've noticed a lot of adds on 2142 bilboards. Not to mention the intel adds everywhere. But like they advertised for I am legend and the Alaskan crab fishing show in camp G. But no I don't want to be bothered with adds in games that I have to pay for, unless the price is brought down.

I couldn't disagree more

I for one support this, it means more money for devs and for Sony. Which will hopefully mean a better gaming experience and a wider variety of games.

Ads are not that bad, if it is done in a realistic way. I mean if there is a bill board on a city street in-game and it had an ad on it, would you really complain?

Would anyone walk down the street and into there local town and complain that they see ads everywhere? No, because ti is a part of life. These kind of small things will add realism and will allow the developers to benefit also. As long as it is done in moderation.

If they are done properly and fairly (in terms of the scenery in game) then it's a matter of principle rather than objection to their actual looks

Doesn't bother me in the least if they fit into the game, i.e. the billboards in Need For Speed games or the posters in stations in Hellgate: London.

I'd rather have other companies give money to developers/publishers and put some ads in the game than have them charge me more for the game.

Ads definitely will bring an untold amount of money to Sony...therefore games with ads shouldnt be costing $60 USD any longer. I wouldn't have much of a problem with that.

But what about games that aren't set in modern cities? Those ads are bound to be somewhere. I just find them annoying.

Ads in GTA would make sense. Ads in Assasin's Creed? Or GH3? What then?

Agreed. I can see it now. You just finish stealthy killing a guy in Metal Gear 4 only to be greeted by an add for a Cheese burger from Burger King. Oh the realisim.
