Hey I use a ball valve on my big rig to, just stick a piece of tubing on it when I need to drain...

Not sure about the UK, but Lowes and Home Depot have them here in the states. So any big name hardware store in the Uk should have em.

How about using pump to drain the loop? (just as a caution so that no amount of water will stay in bends)

Did you mean one like THIS

It has 1/4 thread, so you can put any barb on it. I have it myself.

Inside the hole. That might scare some, but it's a really tight fit and I always seal it with silicone

I always use the same tubing and ball valve, so I never have to break the silicone seal. Never leaked on me before.
