My computer randomly reboots for no reason that i can find, today while playing COD4 it totally shut off. Cannot figure out why i thought it fried or something at first, but then i turned it back on 15 seconds later and am trying to figure out why it shuts off speedfan says "temp02: 87C" but i have it set to warn me at 50C and no warnings cannot figure out exactly what "Temp02" is or what it is monitoring.
I have a 650watt power supply as well...

Undervolt, Is anything overclocked at the moment? If anything is overclocked, back it down to stock and see if the problem reproduces itself. Do you have a different power supply to test with? Is your machine plugged directly into the wall socket or are you plugged into a surge/ups device? Have you physically reviewed your motherboard to look for bulging/leaking capacitors? Are the restarts and shutdowns completely random? Do they occur at idle and load?

You can add your system specifications to your signature by going here: http://www.overclock.net/specs.php?do=addsystem

Good luck

anything is overclocked?
No.

plugged directly into the wall socket or are you plugged into a surge/ups device?
Into a surge protector.

Have you physically reviewed your motherboard to look for bulging/leaking capacitors?
No. But i will now =)

different power supply to test with?
No but i'll see if i cant find one.

Are the restarts and shutdowns completely random?
Seems to happen at load so far it only happens when im playing Call of duty 4 but only happens once i'v shut the game off and restarted it after a little while of not playing.

What PSU do you have? Restarts are typical of bad PSU. Have also seen very dirty computers/Heat issues cause restarts. Lots of dust built up in the CPU heatsink?

Have you tested your PSU with a DMM? Understand your sayin its new..but worth checkin to eliminate PSU problems. This is classic PSU or heat related problem generally. Have you checked GPU temps?Mite need to turn up fan speed on it? RivaTuner is your friend! Generally they run about 30% speed unless reprogramed. From my experiance turning up the fan speed helps a lot to cool those 8800's down.

Don't have a DMM to test it with, my system shows that everything is below 40C at idle except for one thing that constantly shows 87C however i cannot find what it is i suspect it might be a north or south bridge but i cannot find out as i do not know speedfan just shows it at 87C at all times, when i first turn the computer on it is at like 85C but then gets upto 87C and stays there.

For example speedfan says this for the thing that is "87C"
Chip: IT8718F Sensor: Temp2 Sample: 87C Bus: ISA Address $228

Can anyone tell me how to figure out what the supposed 87C thingy is? maybe a bios flash will help this?

UnderLord, which X-Finity 600 watt PSU are you running? There is the 600 watt EE(energy efficient w/apfc) model and then there is just the plain 600 watt model. If your running the none EE model then I suspect that is your problem. It's only supplying 21.66 amps on the 12volt rail which may not be enough to power your entire machine with a 8800GT. The EE model has a single 12volt rail at 36amps which of course is plenty for your setup.

Good luck

Underlord, I'd recommend downloading Everest and see what it's displaying. The temperature readings in Everest are located in Computer->Sensor.

Let us know

Good luck
