Vista not finding drivers for USB storage

Thread Starter
Oh my ****. Vista is so annoying already. On my new build, fully clean install of Vista 64-bit Home Premium is unable to find drivers for any sort of USB storage device (namely, my iPod and my WD Mybook external HD). What gives? I've tried all sorts of things - deleting or renaming the infcache1.inf file, pointing the Windows drivers search to different folders, etc, but to no avail. I've also tried just booting up with all my devices plugged in. Nothing. Vista just says it's looking for drivers, but can't find any that will work.

When I try to manually find and install drivers, there are no options for a generic USB storage device! So what can I do about this? My other USB devices work (keyboard, mouse), but no dice with USB storage. USB storage drives shouldn't even need specific drivers, anyway!

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

That is a weird one - never seen it before, even at work
Tried re-installing with another disk? [possible scratch/corrupt driver on the disk?]

I ahve used vista for almost 2yrs [since Beta 2, then RC1,RC2 and the full now] and i have had a pretty good run with it

The fact that you cannot manually install the drivers as the drivers arn't there makes me think the install media - other than that - no idea...

i have the same WD and i got the same thing. do this

leave everything plugged in. turn off the HDD. and unplug both cords on the back of hdd then wait for about 2 min or so. then plug the usb cord in then the power cord in and let it do its job dont mess with anything and it should reconize it. if you get a pop up saying error issue then clikc it and let it do update by internet. you should get a message saying you have the latest update. and when you get that message do the same procedure again. leave everything plugged in. turn off the HDD. and unplug both cords on the back then wait for about 2 min or so. then plut the usb cord in then the power cord in and let it do its job dont mess with anything and it should reconize it

ghost, it seems like that almost worked! Almost. I tried exactly what you said, and now it says the External HDD driver has been successfully installed. However, I see no drive in My Computer, and in the Device Manager it shows the External HDD with a little yellow sign (as in, it's not working properly). Any other ideas?

Yeah, I also rebooted just to make sure, and it actually asked me to install the drivers again, which it did "successfully" - but still no drive showing up.

Yeah, tried that but no luck either. Microsoft is getting a call soon. Let's just hope I don't have to wait a half hour before getting someone on the line.
