[TG Daily] AMD Delays 4800 - Page 2

So what is nVidia launching that isn't competing with the new ATi line up? I haven't really read up on much of their new offerings since ATi is looking more promising at the moment.

Would this be the 9300, 9400 and 9500's?

That's exactly what it means. ATi doesn't intend for the HD4870 to compete with either of the two new GTX chips. The HD4870X2 later this summer is going to be their high end product. The 4850 and 4870 are meant to compete against the 9-series.

280 GTX and 260 GTX their new top end cards.

I think they are delaying it so they can get more supply of GDDR5. I think that's the whole reason it has been delayed in the first place. They are still saying that they are not sure if they will have enough to supply enough boards at launch.

I don't think that's the reason. They're delaying the 4850 which is powered by GDDR3 and slightly moving up the launch of the GDDR5-based 4870. It's kind of the opposite response to GDDR5 availability problems. They're doing it because they don't want Nvidia's launch to overshadow their own. They're playing it smart and waiting until just after the "WOW" factor of the GTX280's performance subsides, and everyone remembers that they're big, expensive, power hungry monsters.

Nvidia can have the high performance crown; however when you can get 2 ATI's for the price of Nvidia's top end, and beat their top end, why get Nvidia. Low to Mid range (<$250~) is where the sales are at.

You've pretty much just summarized ATi's business strategy almost perfectly.

why do they seem to like shooting themselves in the foot?
this is smart for ATI, not only will the be able to see the new Nvidia GPU before their release but they can now price them competitively with Nvidia seeing how they have that extra week to make any chages
