Acrylic and LED Monitor Mod

post #1 of 30
Thread Starter
Hey guys, ive seen this modification on MekuMods where they replace a monitor's plastic coverings with acrylic to make it transparent. Heres the link. Im hoping to build this soon, im going to order some acrylic within the next few days.

My question is.... Because i dont have the 'External AC adaptor' and i dont understand the idea about connecting a 3.5 audio plug to it or something? (written on their forum), would it be possible to use an old USB cable to power the two LED's mabye with some extra wires. I have a soldering kit and tonnes of old PSU cables which i could steal.

By USB cable i mean something like this

Thanks in advance!

Edit:

Finished the mod now, its turned out ok... ish. The idea worked it looks a little messy, the monitor control panel and the switch for the LED's is dangling down at the moment and im trying to think how to attach it. Also, the LED's were very hard to attach them because of the their length so the glue is visible around them which makes it look a bit messy also. Apart from that, it looks good, better at night.

Thanks to CoffeeJunky and IceOwl for their help. =]

I don't see why the usb cable idea wouldn't work if you have patience and the right connectors. 3.5mm is generally used because the connectors are easily available and easy to attatch.

Thanks for the reply. Ive just stripped a USB cable and ive cut away the data cables leaving the 5v and ground. Im going to use the LED's out of my current case because im going to upgrade to the NZXT Tempest fairly soon so this case will be scrapped. Ive found a spare switch off a cathode inverter.

My problem is im a bit confused which cable is which on the Switch. There is a red and yellow coming from the switch and then the red is connected to a black cable which has a small plastic plug which you connect to the inverter. Which of these cables is ground and power and what is the last cable? Once i work this out ill be fine with the rest i think. =]

Ok, im not sure about which cable is which here. Ive provided a picture to show what i mean.

[img=http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/7894/0506081222bm0.th.jpg]

Can anyone tell me which cable is which, i have no multimeter or anything to find out which is which. This is the switch off an Alaska Dual Cathode kit, the white connector goes into the Inverter.

Any help on this would be great!

See here -

Yellow is +12v
Red is +5v
Black is GND (I think )
Wiring is not my strongest point.

So the two wires coming from the switch are both +12v despite being different colours. The black wire off the invertor plug is GND.

Oh! Thanks for that coffee =]

Hmm this makes me think this switch might be hard to attach. I have the USB wire with a black GND and Red 5V cable. Im going to take the LED's out of the case soon. I think they only take 5V of power because there is only the Black and Red connected in the molex connection.

Could i cut the yellow 12v cable and just attach that to the ground of the USB cable and have the 5v red attached to the 5v in the switch? Or would that make the switch not work then ?

Again, any help would be great.

A switch should work with any range of voltage, whether its 5v or 12v.

Ok, so how would i connect it?

Im going to cut off the molex connection because i dont need it, this would leave me with the two 12v wires and the black cable. Would i still need that inverter for it to work. If i still use the inverter, that would mean that i would connect the yellow to the Red in the USB cable and black to black in the USB cable?

Would that be right? Sorry for the extreme newbie-ness. First ever wiring encounter!

Thanks again!

I'm a bit confused.

Cut off the switch leaving you with as much cable as possible. You will then have a switch with one yellow and one red cable.

USB +5v -----> Yellow cable -------> Switch -------> Red cable ------> LEDs------> USB GND.

^^^^Is that what you are planing to do^^^^
