Yes!

Thank you! I just didnt know how to make it work. Yeah thats the aim. So ill do what youve said. For the LED's, how would i put them into it. Would i make a parallel circuit or series?

Thanks again!

Err...Thats where I start to get lost...GCSE science was never my strong point. You may want to read up on some LED modding guides for the answer to that. Also I don't know if the LEDs you have are designed for 5v (sometimes you need to wire a resistor in too - ohms law is your friend when it comes to that)

Ah right, well i dont really know anything about these LED's i might just get some off ebay because then ill know what they are. I saw some with resistors already put on. Atleast then i dont run the risk of doing it without resistors then damaging

Something like this ?

Yes(ish)
I don't think they'll work on 5v though and they will be so bright they will burn your eyes out. Maybe you should change the thread title to 'LED help' or something like that. 'Monitor mod' might make people think this is a worklog not a request for help

Ok then i shall, i think ive found out the resistors id need. According to this, for 5v id need a 100ohm resistor.

Im looking at this too, i think i know what do now. Just need to order the right resistor and those LED's.

Looks right to me, although I must say I've never done anything like this

Ok, basically. Me and my friend have been working it out and i can only have 2 red yellow or orange coloured LED's off one USB cable. This is due to their forward voltage. Ive found a pack of LED's on the internet which say they come with 5V DC resistors! This could be what i need. My only problem is, my mate says he needs to know what the current in a USB cable does, is it always the same or does it change? If he knew this, it would work?

I cant make sence of it. =] The two orange LED's both take 2.2v max so thats 4.4 and its a 5v cable so ill have enough voltage. I just dont understand any more of it like resistors and stuff. I think i need to put a resistor on each LED and then it should be ok?

Can anyone experienced with this help me out. I have no idea

Thanks again!

Edit: Can i just have 2 Blue LED's which run at a total of 6.8v and just connect them up anyway because i dont need the LED's on full power because they will be covered with screws, its only going to be to make the edges of the acrylic glow. Ive found the same pack but blue so if the resistors are correct, ill buy this!

You can take 1000maH continuously off a desktop usb port (laptops are usually 500maH).

Use this wizard to figure out what resistors to use and check out all the topics at the top of the page. We will educate you if you like it or not. http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz

Thanks for that link, the wizard reckons ill need 82 ohms resistors.

The thing is, this pack im going to get, comes with resistors for a 5v DC and 12v DC so.... im assuming this means if i attach one of these resistors, it will make it safe to run 5v though it. The thing is because im only starting with 5v from the USB cable and the 2 LED's require 6.8v. So this means im going to have to set it up as a parralel circuit so they glow at equal brightness.

My question is, would the circuit work if there is less then required voltage and also would the included resistors with the LED's be sufficient?

Thanks again!

Edit: Link to pack
