HDD failing?

Thread Starter
Over the past few days, my XP HDD has been making a sound like it powered down, and then my computer will just freeze. Its happening more and more frequently. Has anyone experienced this? I guess the hard drive is failing? I ran it almost 24/7 for a year...

In any case, its a WD HDD so I can just RMA it. Once I had a WD HDD spontaniously combust and they let me RMA it

***Update***
Ok, well I booted up my Vista HDD and I still hear my XP HDD is still making the shut-down noise. Then I got a blue screen in Vista...what the heck? If a HDD thats not in use has a error, would I get a blue screen? A mobo problem wouldn't cause my HDD's to turn on and off sparraticly would it?

theoritically speaking the hdd controller is controlled by your motherboard so i can make it do what ever it wants.

you should look for some sort of hdd diagnostic software. has your S.M.A.R.T failed or have errors?

do a quick check by looking in Everest under storage & right click my computer and goto manage -> storage.

i would say your hdd is probably showing signs of failure

SATA or IDE? I know with IDE when one of your HDDs has a problem, the other(s) may not function properly.

Its SATA. Iv been switching between both drives most of the day and the freezing only occurs on the XP drive. The BSOD on my Vista drive seems to have been coincidence...

Also, XP ran a check disk startup diagnostic and tried to repair...whatever was wrong. So far there has been no problems for 6ish hours which is longer then normal. Once I can get back to my PC, ill try to check Everest.

Thanks for the help thus far!

Also run WD diagnostics on it, that way you know for sure if it's the drive.
