All kidding aside, what I really think it is, is special instructions on the SB that get relayed to the NB when the mobo detects the specified CPU (it could be all BEs or just that "upcoming 2.8GHz CPU"), which in turn does some automatic multiplier and voltage adjustments. The fact that AMD is confident that this level of overclocking won't cause instability leads me to think that this will only work on special BEs (yet to be released like that 2.8GHz one in the article).
Southbridge has.. Nothing to do with OC'ing.

Its all NB.. That actually connects the RAM to CPU, and the bus for the NB is the FSB.. Of course AMD uses HT, but its the same concept.

That's what I said. The NB does everything when you overclock. I just said that maybe the SB700 gives out special signals to the NB when an specific CPU is detected, and then the NB performs an overclock.

In an AMD chipset the north and south bridges are unified.

If I recall correctly, AMD/ATi was having issues with the clock generator in the SB700. They originally planned to fix this problem with an updated SB700, the SB710, but it was cancelled and the fix was postponed to SB750.

If there was an issue with the internal clock generator, then it makes sense that a fix to this problem would allow Phenoms to remain stable while clocked a higher speeds. What doesn't fit is that the SB700 will give a boost to this "upcoming 2.8GHz" CPU. This would have to mean that the problem originated with the SB600 series, received a partial fix with SB700 and will be competely eliminated in SB750.

Does anyone have any good info comparing the overclockability of Phenom when paired with SB700 vs SB600? If Phenom can overclock higher on SB700 that lends credibility to there being a clock generator/PLL issue that has since been resolved.

Cool, i wonder when we'll see an AMD processor do above 4GHz... this could be it?!

Personally, I'd be surprised to see K10 clock that high, maybe after K10.5 and the move to 45nm.

Well, most of the high clocks for Phenoms have been done on SB600 based boards, but that's mostly because there are so few SB700 boards out at the moment and they are usually paired on the more budget oriented mobos.

An ace up AMD's sleeve? They better have a royal flush when Nehalem releases.
