Dilemma: Step Up or go Dual Monitors.

Thread Starter
So here's my situation:

I'm pretty broke as it is from computers, but when I get some money, I really want to get a new monitor for dual monitor setup (ie a nice 19" beside my Samsung 226BW 22" Monitor.

However, I'm really getting nervous because the new nVidia GPU's are coming out soon, and my Step-up has 49 days left.

I have Vista and XP and I always use XP since I don't like vista for gaming. The downside is that I miss media center for watching T.V. (and oh man I'd love it if I could watch TV and game at the same time with a dual monitor setup -- or talk to the GF and play CS:S at the same time).

And I just bought a eVGA 9800GTX. Should I: get the new card that is coming out and pay the difference between them (hence getting one massive amazing card that I would otherwise never normally buy -- ie. a GX2 / GT260/280?

or should I just let it slide, and go for my beloved dual monitor fantasy?

I am very flustured, and I can't seem to figure out what to do.

I'm very happy with my 9800GTX and it does all I want and more, even with CS CS Source and Crysis, etc.

But at the same time I don't want to pass up this awesome opportunity to get a monster of a card that I would never even consider looking at?

Thanks,

Thawny

Since you are content with performance of the 9800GTX, go grab that second monitor.

Well you obviously want that crazy expensive GT280 so step up when it's released. I hope it comes out before you step up expires.

The 9800GTX is already amazing as it is. Look at my sig rig, and think about it. I can't play any new games at all on this.

Get the second monitor.

lol, I get your point. There will always be newer, better things to buy.

The thing that just gets to me, is that all I have to do is pay the difference for a monster of a card, not 600 bucks flat.

I would get a second monitor, it will increase your productivity. A monitor, imo, would last longer also. That 9800GTX should be fine for most games.

oh man, now I'm even more confused. Low Strife encourages the Dual Monitor, you encourage the gaming performance benefiit of newer hardware.

Ahhhhhhh

See this is what I was hoping would be the general consensus of the OCN community. It seems the most logical. I mean, though I would only have to pay the difference of the two cards, the Hardware is not really necessary when a 9800GTX can run it just fine. All in all, it seems that both avenues will cost about the same give or take ~100

Exactly, when the time comes and the majority of the games require a better card, you will have a better card than the new GT260/280. Additionly, you will have two monitors which get more use for general tasks than games do.
