CPU voltage

Hi,

Is 1.3V too much for a C2D E6420? Will my CPU last a year or more at this voltage? Only reason why im asking this is cause I plan on upgrading in about a year and a half. I dont wanna have my pc blow up in the mean time!

1.3v is not too much. Yes it will last for more than a year.

1.35v is within the standard voltage range on the E6420. I've worked with a few E6420's and am using one in this machine now, currently clocked at 3.55GHz using 1.44v. Some have taken them up to 3.8GHz. I would consider high voltage on this processor to be anything above 1.45v (in CPU-Z, not BIOS) and dangerous volts to be above 1.6v.

Mine is not really very stable at 1.40v at 3.4 GHz without a little bit of extra voltage to the FSB (+0.05v, results may vary). I usually need 1.425v to 1.4375v for stability above 3.4 GHz.

Also, remember, the E6400 and E6420 are significantly different processors, despite the minor difference in part number. The E6400 is a 2 MB Allendale core and the E6420 is a 4 MB Conroe core. These cache sizes are significant because they mean more wattage, and different cores are produced at different fabrication faciliities. However, I'd say push it up to 1.44v and test. If not stable, drop to 1.42v and push your FSB and MCH up just a little bit each.

When I had my e6420 I used up to 1.5v. (Technically it was only 1.47 after Droop)

i have an e6400 at 3.4 right now. its 1.39vcore in bios about 1.37~38 with a fixed vdroop mod on my motherboard.

edit: and to answer your question, 1.3v is not too much. & it should last more than a year or two. depending how long you decide to keep it.
