8800gs or 9600gt

Thread Starter
Hey everyone . Ok, so getting the last part of my computer on Sunday, I'm ethier getting a 8800gs, or a 9600gt. Usually a no brainer, 9600gt would win, but the 8800gs I'm looking at is on sale for $180, and is the xfx alphadog edition, and the 9600gt is just a random palit one. I've had a good experince with Palit before (7900gs, <3), but recently I've heard some bad things about the 9600gt, and all i've heard about the gs is that its as fast as the old 8800gts, but will overclock to near stock level of the 8800gt. Any help would be appriciated
Oh, hai.

i would most definitely go with the 9600gt. later down the line, you could buy another one and run sli. everyone knows the 9600gt in sli kicks serious ass.

Thanks, but I only game at 1440x900, so sli would be a waste, and by the time I have a sli motherboard and enough cash to get another 9600gt, the gt260/gt280 will be out, and be within price range .

Should of mentioned in the first post, this is just a time filler card, going to upgrade when the new amd/nvidia series become affordible (i.e. down to about 400ish). The xfx 8800gs alphadog XXX edition is 180, and the Palit 9600gt is 210, is it worth the extra 30? At the res?

Get the 9600GT, I have one and it kick ass!

And also 9600GT is 256but/512MB compared to the 8800GS 192bit/384MB, so 9600GT is a good choice for gaming at 1440x900 with AA/AD as i do

Get the 9600GT if you have the cash. I have a evga 8800gs in my second computer and it is a great card, only paid $109 for it after the $30 mail-in rebate. So if you dont have allot of cash to spend get the 8800gs. It plays everything maximum at 1680x1050 other then crysis which gets played at 1440x900 medium/high settings. I bet if I had a better cpu maybe crysis would play better on that system. (AMD Athlon 64 x2 4000+)

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/E..._GT_SSC/7.html

Heres some benchmarks with both those cards and more. The GS actually beats the GT in a few benchmarks.

Between 8800GS and 9600GT, should get the 9600GT. 9600GT's performance closes to HD3870 and 8800GT. 8800GS aims to replace 8600GT/GTS.
