[Bit-tech] What The Hell Is Wrong With Japanese Games? - Page 3

as a generality, japanese games seem to be more of a controlled experience, as far as story telling is concerned. for instance Solid Snake is clearly defined in his views and motivation, while in Half life 2 you pretty much are Gordon Freeman and you experience the story instead of observe it (i know they are somewhat different genres but just from a storytelling aspect). both are equally valid ways to tell a story, just a different approach i think....hope that makes sense =/

:swearing:
I found his reasoning to be flawed and ill informed. He makes over generalizations and seems to actually lack a working knowledge of cultural influences, internationally and domestically, and how those influences play into video games.

At no point does he mention the single biggest influence on JRPGs... MANGA and ANIME!!!. Maybe you've heard of these. The sword is a big deal because it's a prominent feature in anime and manga. And really... swords are just cool Which one could argue that JRPGs are really just an extension of the two. And Americans do like JRPGs. It's companies that don't because it costs an arm and a leg to translate, port, ship and distribute those games in the United States, so unless you import, your generally only going to get games from companies that can afford to export.

And really Canada's gaming and development culture IS NOT different from the US. Prince of Persia and Assassins creed are both put out by Ubisoft, idiot... but really, Relic is a Canadian company and, second to Blizzard, is one of the premier studios in the RTS genre.
Bioware is Canadian, shall i go on? And they do nothing but RPGs, aside from MDK2, oh wait one of the best shooters ever made... and likes its fries smothered in gravy!
Wanna know why MMO's are so huge in Korea? Because its a small country that is so blanketed in internet access that there is literally no place in the country where you cannot have internet access, combine that with the cultural similarities they share with the Japanese, minus the xenophobia due to US military and Korean economic policy, and you begin to see why the Japanese love their traditional RPGs so much, and why the Koreans are so into MMO's and RTS, and FPS (quake 3 is pretty big there too) for that matter, so I guess you could say the Koreans just really like online games, imagine that.

Learn about the people and the countries your going to talk about Mr. Joe Martin, and take those glasses off, you look like Harry Potter with kleinfelters disease. Though I guess when you can't get into Hogwarts you end up writing crappy articles for some website.

The Japanese can say the same about "American" games. American games consist of nothing more than the extreme milking of the FPS market. Essentially every FPS is the same, just with different hand and gun skins and with some extra added features and ridiculously demanding system to run them just for what? To run around shooting at some objects on screen? The Japanese do not see a point in that and that is why the FPS genre never took off in Japan or Asia for that matter.

he didn't say that japanese games are bad in the article, he was commenting on how games from all areas of the world tend to fall into that region's various stereotypes. maybe he comes across as negative towards japanese rpgs because that's the example to use, but i don't get the sense that he was particularly biased, although i haven't read any of his other writing to know really.

I think they're stupid, I like guns, ammo, grenades, bf2, crysis, that kind of stuff. I also think games with magic and stuff are stupid. Assassins creed is an exception. That was just badass, no crazy looking swords, just a bunch of history and future combined.

The Japanese aren't the only ones that are 'over-the-top'... Heck, what about Max Payne? Doom? Quake? It's pretty funny to think about how the Japanese must see those games and say the exact same stuff, hahaha!!
