All Nvidia has over ATi is Single card performance. If it didn't have that they would be in deep trouble. Anyways even if there was 4 way Sli who would do it. i am guessing those smart people that have 3 way sli now

So? The prices will probably be comparable enough that they will be competitors.
If I can get a 4870X2 that ends up on par with or faster than a GTX280 and also costs less, I don't give a damn how many GPUs it has. There's very few people who would be bothered by the fact that it took ATi two GPUs on one card to beat one of Nvidia's if the price is cheaper. I wouldn't be surprised if RV770 was designed from the beginning with this type of multi-GPU, single card solution in mind.

Agreed.

simply when your single GPU is not enough, you put another one to add some more power, that same goes for 3 gpus and 4 gpus.
4870x2 vs. GTX280.
that will be how its played. ATI can't come up with a single stronger gpu to face nvidia so they basically slapped on 2 vs. 1 good or bad? we'll see.
However GTX 280 can also SLI/tiple SLI so its HD 4870x2 Crossfire vs. GTX 280 4 vs.2

The scaling with the 4th GPU on 9800GX2 SLI was worst than scaling with 3. thats probably why Nvidia is abandoning it and trying to in prove 3 gpu scaling. ATI needs all the GPUs they can get on a single platform to compete with Nvidia high end performance wise. scaling on ATI's architecture on the 3 and 4th GPU ain't too bad. Come down which games like which videocard and how well ATI and Nvidia can optimize their drivers.

I don't think it's a matter of whether or not ATI could have made a single stronger GPU. I have no doubt that given the time and resources, ATI could develop a single core that would beat the GT200. However, performance isn't the only thing ATI is focused on. They wanted to make sure they could make a competitive product that was cheaper, smaller, more scalable, and used less energy. So, they developed the RV770 with the knowledge in mind that they were going to offer it as a dual-GPU, single card solution in the high end of the market. It's not necessarily a bad thing, and given the situation AMD/ATI is in it was likely a very solid strategy.

Agreed. Even a single 3870x2 allows me to play all my games (except Crysis) cranked as high as it will go @ 1920x1200. Some are borderline like DiRT but it does get the job done.

I think nVidia should work on the efficiency of 3-way SLI before attempting to tackle 4-way SLI.

I am probably just going to end up getting one 280 GTX or 260 GTX... Or even one of the ATI HD4870x2's... Tis all I need, as long as it outperforms the 8800GTS by a significant amount, I will be pretty happy.. Give me Crysis on Ultra High Mod at 40-50 fps with AA set to 4x and AF set to 16 x, i'll be one happy camper..
