New build will not post. (Fixed)

Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

My computer components for my new build came today. When I started it up, everything powered up, but I had no display at all.

The components are listed below in my sig. The graphics card I'm using is an xfx 8800gts 640mb.

On boot there are no signs that anything is wrong, I hear no beeps from the motherboard.

So far I've tried the following:

1) Clearing the CMOS. (did this a few times to no avail)

2) Trying a different graphics card. (still nothing, tested these in another system and they work fine).

3) Reseated CPU (Did twice, all pins are fine)

4) Since there were no beeps I removed all ram. I got beeps on start up in this case, still nothing on screen. Tried with only one dimm, still nothing.

5) Tried all 4 PCIexpress slots but still no graphics.

6) Tried a few different monitors with different connectors with both graphics cards and no go.

So the PC isn't even posting, it's just sitting there with all fans running.

The only thing strange that I see is that the HDD activity light is just flashing on and off at 1 second intervals... This has to be a clue to something.

I tried a different hard drive and different sata ports, the same thing happens.

I'm at a complete loss for what to do because I don't even know if it's motherboard or cpu...

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated...

You have all the power connections plugged into the motherboard right?

does the keyboard light up and can you change turn the num lock / scroll lock / cap lock LED on and off?

may be it's a problem with your display

does the display work with some other PC?
did you remember to check the connection between the GFX and the monitor?
is the monitor set on the right input?

did you plug in the power to the GFX?

---after you've tested the above---
you dont need a hdd connected for the mobo to post

so remove all accessories and components from the mobo except:
CPU + HSF
GFX (and power)
1 stick of RAM
atx 24 pin and 4pin power

now try booting it up and see if you get a post.

I tested the displays with other systems and all is fine.

I've tried a number of different connections. HDMI, DVI, VGA and nothing sadly.

I've double checked all connections there a sec ago, and tried to boot again with no graphics again.

Really worried about this :-(

Yeah I tested a geforce 6800 with the same results I'm afraid. If it was the PCIe slots that were the problem how would I ever know? (P.s. I tried both cards in all 4 slots.

Some new mobo have 2-3 extra spots that you have to plug in power to (mine has 3).

Have you double checked that it is all plugged in. Also like the other poster said you should unplug every accessory and fan except your mobo, cpu, heatsink fan, gfx and ram.... You really need to take it to square one and work from there.

If you get nothing take the mobo out of the case and try it just sitting on the cardboard box or the static bag it comes with.

Or try another PSU? you have one around?

demonband23 has a point, although it is unlikely there could possibly be a short somewhere on the mobo

so take it out of the case flip it upside down for a sec to clear anything on top of the mobo then set it outside the case and set it up from there

if all else fails RMA the mobo because

i just went to the asus site and checked out the mobo and specifications and it seem that everything SHOULD work together.

RMA it, but if you really want to make sure before you do anything, do a touch test (put finger on heatsink for a few seconds). But its probably best to RMA it.

Oh and I want to post my results after I finalise them for a combined theory (comparison of 2 fans vs 1 fan on Scythe Infinity)/TIM review on OCN, which category would that fit in? Thanks in advance, (DELETE)
