8600GT (NOT GTS) Overclock?

Thread Starter
I lucked out and got a deal on some "fast" RAM, and I feel my CPU is doing ok at stock (for now I am a newbie so I want get my feet wet before playing with the real thing).

So I am hoping to try to overclock the cheap GPU that is in my rig right now.

I am looking for:
Monitoring Software (Temps of GPU)
"Fast" Drives for 8600GT
Overclocking Software for GPU

Any suggestions on where to start (remember NOOB here)

Thanks,
Build 1.2.1

Driver:
Just go with the latest version of Nvidia's official driver

substantial performance boosts from my experience
Overclocking:
Rivatuner
Stability Testing:
ATItool's artifact scan
(set to find smallest artifact)
Temp. Monitoring:
ATItool / GPU-Z

How do I set to smallest artifact?

Edit:
I am new to ATI Tool and did not notice the option for setting that anywhere last night!

Load up ATItool. In the main screen, click the "settings" box in the bottom right corner. Then at the top drop-down box, click "artifact scanning" (should be the second one down). Now, at the bottom, there should be a left-right slider that says "More .... Less artifacts detected" right above it. Move the slider all the way to the left.

Now doing this, when you go back and run the 3DCube artifact scanner (by clicking "scan for artifacts"), it should detect artifacts or errors more readily. Making it sensitive like that allows for better stability testing of an overclocked card.

I've got the same card. Atitool is great because it can try and find the highest stable overclock for you.

And you can change the bios of the card with nibitor and nvflash to upp the vcore, if you need it.

So ATITool will adjust an nVidia card? I know I can use it to test but I did not know it will "tune" it like it would with an ati card. When I open ATI Tool I do not have the option do that?

ATITool is to test for artifacts. Use RivaTuner to overclock and mange your temps using the fan adjustments

Agree. I'm not keen on ATITool for overclocking but its a great tool for artifact scanning. You should get a fairly decent overclock, the 8600 series overclock pretty well on the whole.
