Atitool has some button called "find highest vmem, highest clock" etc. If it goes too high, it goes back down to find a good overclock.

But, riva is way better overall for managing your speeds.

DarkNite,

Thank you! Will this Find Highest vmem/clock work in vista and an 8600gt? My buttons were grayed out (I think)?

The atitool driver doesn't work in vista yet. Yo can still use it to scan for artifacts though.

My lastest run of 3DMark 06 scored an amazing 3964, lol. What kind of gains would you expect to see by over clocking the GPU?

While on the subject how much of a difference do I need to make to see a difference in real world game play? I play COD4, GRID & Assassins Creed.

I think you should gain 10fps in most games, or roughly 1000 3dmarks from my experience, but I got quite a decent overclock out of mine.

Yeah I gained about 10 fps when I OC'ed my 8600, I think I had it at 650/800 (1600 DDR)

Thanks again guys...

One last question (atleast for now)... Where you able to overclock the GPU with the stock cooler or will I quickly hit a heat wall (wave) on the stock cooler... This is the card:

The stock cooler should be more than enough. I idle in the mid-40's and load in the low 60's, then again MSI didn't use the reference cooler. Just keep an eye on temps and make sure they don't go above 90*C.

Well, for one thing it seems you have a DDR2 8600GT, which isn't so good for performance. My eVGA 8600GT 256MB GDDR3 scored about 4,500 in 3DMark06 at stock clocks. I put on a $30 Coolermaster Coolviva Pro SE heatsink/fan with AS5, ramsinks, and I did a pencil volt mod and got it up to 920 MHz core and 940 MHz memory, and 2024 MHz shader. This bumped me up to a tad over 7,000 in 3DMark06, which isn't too shabby for an 8600GT on an AMD X2 setup.

Just for comparison though, I just got a PNY 8800GT for $150, and with stock speeds, stock fan, on the same system, I got over 10,000 in 3DMark06. So about $100 for the card, plus $30 for the cooler, plus $5 for the AS5, that's $135. For $15 more the 8800GT is a much better deal. However, at the time, the 8800GT's were still expensive, and I can still use the aftermarket HSF on my new 8800GT, so I got my money's worth out of that setup. With the fully modded 8600GT, I could play Crysis @ 1280x720 (720p, on an HDTV) on mostly medium, some high settings, and get 35-45 FPS on average. So it's not a total loss of a card like most with no real world experience like to claim.
