Low Budget Upgrade

Thread Starter
I want to upgrade my my old s939 athlon 64, but I don't have much money to do it with. I was thinking of doing something like this. Could anyone tell me if this is a good upgrade for the money spent? I'd like to keep it around $250-300 max. Thanks.

E7200

G.Skill 2GB PC26400

GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L

Or suggest any better parts to do it with? I was thinking maybe the Vendetta 2 for a cpu cooler.

Edit: I do plan to overclock as far as I can go.

It all looks good to me. The only thing you might want to do is go for some 1066 RAM to give that extra bit of leeway when overclocking.

Is there anyone that can comment on whether the Vendetta 2 will fit on the GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L if oriented towards the back of the case as to blow air out that way? The rather large looking sink that is close to the cpu socket has me worried. I cant find any into on the compatibility of these 2 components as of right now.

I'm fairly confidant it will fit. I'm sure theres someone on these forums with a DS3L and a vendetta.

Update: I just ordered the parts, this is what I got.

E2180

2 GB G.Skill DDR2 800

MSI P35 Neo2-FR

Vendetta 2 as cpu cooler

$289.52 with shipping was the total spent.

Next up is a change of monitor as I'm sure this is being wasted on 1280x1024 ^^ I plan to get the Dell 2408WFP. Yes I know my single (g92) 8800gts won't run highest quality on this high res, but monitors last a really long time and this one is a high quality monitor to boot. S-PVA + 1920 x 1200 resolution. This current upgrade is just to hold me off until Nahalem comes out along with newer gpus.

I changed mobos because I read in a few different places that sometimes the DS3L won't hold its vcore after a reboot. Obviously this will not go as I plan to overclock as much as I can. I got different opinions on the board, but I switched just to be on the safe side.

Update: I received the parts yesterday and put them all together so far. I was surprised at how much force I had to put on those push pins on the Vendetta 2 to get them to stay in the mobo. Anyway, I started to oc the e2180 and so far its at 3.2 stable. Ill put some 3d06 scores here.

For reference I was at 6880 3DMark06 marks with my old rig (Same as sig except I had an Athlon 64 3500, DFI lanparty sli nforce 4 mobo, 2 gig ddr ram and a zalman heatsink)

I forgot to try out 3d06 at stock so =)

Cpu @ 2.5 (ram 1:1, 5-5-5-15): 10268

Cpu @ 2.9: 11204

Cpu @ 3.1: 12093

Ive been able to get to 3.4 but it hasn't been stable yet. Also I cant find a program to give me correct cpu temps. Ive tried Core temp and Real temp and they both never move from 29 degrees. Any other suggestions?

Edit: I have pics of the building process but I have no way of getting them to my comp as of yet o.O

HWmonitor give correct temps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it and it is giving the same temps as CoreTemp and RealTemp. They are all giving me 27C at idle right after booting up the computer. I checked the bios and it was giving me 35C when I first started. Is there a way to get my accurate temps with a program or is my bios not reading it right (doubt it is wrong)

I doubt the e2180 is so cool that it is running 27C with 1.45 vcore. Or am I wrong?

Edit: I tried running some benches and I saw through the programs that the cpu temp was going up, but even under load it never passed 40C. I wonder how this is?

Well that seems low, The vendetta 2 is a good cooler though. I have attatched an older version of Coretemp, which I know gives correct readings. I idle at 47*C and load at 72*C at the same voltage on a lapped big typhoon.

Thanks

Now its telling me its idling at 42C at a little higher voltage (1.50 in bios just to get 1.47 idle (1.46 load ) I'm sure these are the right numbers.

I tried the pencil mod I found for this board, but I didn't see any difference. Maybe I didn't put enough down on the resistor. . .

On a OC related note, I'm up to 3.5 stable now. I was only hoping for 3.4 so I'm happy with this cpu for sure. It might have a little left in it, I'll have to find out.
