Assistance Building a HTPC

Thread Starter
Hello,

I am going to be building a new computer and I want to turn my current PC into a HTPC. I was wondering if the current specs (please refer to signature) would be good enough to watch some good ol'e movies I have on the computer and record some episodes of House MD.

In addition, please advise me of any other equipment I would need along with an estimate of cost.

Thank you,
Jinx

well if you want to make it look nice pick out a HTPC case:
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCateg...a-Center-Cases

if you're going to connect it to some sort of sound system other than your TV, i would recommend a higher end sound card, can run anywhere starting $50 and up. but if your ears aren't that sensitive to sound then no need.

connecting to a tube TV you will probably run S-video. the 7600 should be powerful enough to handle movies and etc for play back but if you're going to want to record and capture stuff on you pc you need a TV tuner card.

in the old days (when i did that) ATI all in wonder was the stuff, now im not too sure but Hauppauge is good and if you can find a high end ATI all in wonder is also good.

remember in FEB 2009 all will be switched over to DIGITAL therefore you want one with a ATSC tuner or you'll have to get a converter box later.

And if you're going to record stuff from you TV then a Hard dive ADDITION should be on your list:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...tCode=10005934

that CPU is only running at 2.0 GHZ (and being single core) you should OC that thing atleast 2.4/2.5 GHZ -> which may require more cooling.

And 512mB of ram on a HTPC is not a good idea. you must upgrade that ram to a min, 1GB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820141212
if you add that to our current ram that 1.5 GB which should be good enough

So basically to get my pc to recognize the TV as a monitor all I have to do is get a S-Video to TV composite AV cable? If so can this work?

from my experience when the pc is shutdown and you connect the PC to the TV then turn it on while the TV is on it will recognize the PC as monitor, but let me goto say on a SDTV using S-video the resolution isn't that clear. you will have hard time reading small font. it works better if the TV was and LCD or something using VGA or DVI/hdmi input.

if it doesn't recognize it connect the TV to svideo while the computer is on. and on your monitor open up nvidia control panel and set the TV to CLONE your monitor display (also set TV as primary).

as for that cable it will work. I actually have it. IT's not made well and is very cheap. there is alot of noise and etc. i would get a better quality cable from monoprice.

if you're going to use the audio on your TV, then hurry up and go here and pick this up before it goes away.

Let me reinforce this......resolution on an SDTV isn't just bad. It SUX0RS!!!! Good news is, that for an HTPC, since you are watching movies on it, once the movie starts, it will look good...just everything else from within windows will look like crap.
