That is my Dell Core Duo lappy 1.8ghz 2gb mem What i suggest you do is turn off some services in vista. Services.msc into the run prompt

Here is a good guide. The black viper website has been doing these guides for a while but you can do your own looking around

http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

I'm actually going to do a bit more now than i already have to make vista a bit lighter

Its not really using all that memory, most of it it is a caching service to make programs open quicker (which it successfully does) It is called superfetch and it will give up memory if it is forced to.

At the moment I'm using 1.1gb of 2gb

What programs are you running? In Contrast XP uses about 300mb tops when idling

Speedfan, antivirus (Bitdefender), Squeezecenter Server, Yahoo Widgets, Iexplorer (100mb of RAM), uTorrent, evga precision, mouse & keyboard utility, BBC iPlayer delivery manager.

I have alot open at the moment and my PC has been on 12hrs so Superfetch is having afield day. Doesn't affect usability though.

i have vista on my laptop and main gaming machine... ive turned off a lot of vista special effects cos my laptop was handling it (only has 1gb ram =/) it was using 700-900mb idle, now it uses 612mb which makes the difference between taking 2 minutes to switch programs, to immediate. I cant remember how i turned them off, but from memory it was under performance options.
my computer which also runs vista uses around 800mb but i dont notice it, as i have 4gb ram anyway.

The more RAM you have, the more Vista utilizes for itself.

As an example, with a few of my normal applications running right now, i'm sitting @ 2.3 GB used.

It's pretty interesting to see how big the difference in utilization from 1 GB to 2 to 4 to 8 GB is...(i have systems with each amount )
