Port Forwarding CSS?!!?

I want to run Source deticated server

I have a crappy treadnet wireless router and I can't get the port forwarding to work SO!

I want to just run a switch instead of a router out of my modem so I don't have to do port forwarding....will that work?!?!

so it will go:

Cable Modem----Switch----2nd switch---source deticated server
......................................\\
...................................... Wireless router---(cat 5 cable)---Gaming Rig

I don't see why you don't just do port forwarding, port range forwarding, UPnP, or Port Triggering.

It is much simpler then you think, though it does depend on the router and firmware you have.

All you need to do is go to your IP config page for your computer, set it to a static IP address (one that does not need DHCP). Then go into you're routers config page and go to port forwarding, UPnP, or Port triggering, or Port Range Forwading.

Put these Ports listed into the place where it says Port.

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...php?p_faqid=11

^
Those are the ports you need to open.

If you have any other questions just ask.

There isn't a big need to open a hole in security just because you don't want to do port forwarding.

Edit:

You could always try using DD-WRT for your firmware instead of the trendmicro firmware or what ever. Has much more options then your current firmware probable has.

make sure u allow put in ip for ur server like this EX. 192.168.1.105

Edit: you will need a Router then u can use the switch

Well, it will work.

If it doesn't, then see if you are going to be able to upgrade your routers firmware to the latest one that the manufacturer has released or dd-wrt.

No, this will not work. Your ISP will only allow 1 "workstation" to access it and gain an IP at once. In this setup nothing is handeling any type of DHCP, so both the server and the PC will try to talk to the ISP and one will be denied. Better solution. Modem -> Server -> Router -> gaming PC. You'll need 2 NIC's in the server, and you'll have to setup and enable Internet Connection Sharing for this to work, but this will allow both to get online without having any router involved. This also will allow you to run a firewall on your PC behind the server, so even if the server gets hit, you can keep your PC safe.

this is my portforwarding settings..
i started CS:S steam Console server, as the WAN ip of my router was 192.168.10.1, i tried to connect through that, using the same PC the server is started on..
Technically i thought this would work, CS:S gave me error on connection, 4 Retry's but No connection..

I am confussed, is there a problem with the PortForwarding, or is it that i cant connect like that..

192.168.10.1 is definitely not your WAN IP. The 192.168.*.* address range (among others) is reserved for private networks.

Are you sure your modem does not have a built-in router? If it does, modem may be handing out DHCP leases to devices on the LAN, resulting in the router thinking that the 192.168.10.1 address is the WAN IP.

If your router's stock firmware is limiting your port forwarding options, check the router database at www.dd-wrt.com to see if your router supports DD-WRT.

You need a router immediately following the modem to handle NAT and DHCP for the internal network, a switch will not work.

Also, if you receive a dynamic IP from your ISP (as opposed to a static IP), you may need to look into something to DynDNS to dynamically update DNS records so that your server is still accessible from the internet if your WAN IP changes.

192.168.10.1 <-- that looks like a LAN side modem IP address. That is what my Ambit modem has on it's LAN port.

Edit: Ignore this post. I was thinking of 192.168.100.1
