HELP to overclock my new QX9770 PC

Thread Starter
Hi I have built myself a bit of a monster but at the moment I think it's got a chain round it's neck. I have very little knowledge on overclocking (it has been 8 years since i have done any overclocking), and was hopeing that this site and its members could help me?

I have:
Intel QX9770
Asus Striker II Extreme
Nvidia 9800GX2 (STD)
Coolermaster 1200W PSU (couldn't get hold of a 1000W Modular)
Coolermaster Cosmos S case
Crucial Ballistix DDR3, 1600MHz CL8, 4Gb
Samsung Spinpoint F1 750Gb in RAID0
Zalman CNPS9500A HSF (soon to be changed to water cooling waiting for pay day).

Hope someone could guide me in the right direction

Thank's in advance Eddy.

(scratches head???). why if i may ask did you not just go with the QX9650 and save yourself about $600? The two chips both have unlocked multi's and are proven to have virtually the same headroom for overclocking.

also don't bother with overclocking with that zalman. It was made for single core processors and could even handle mild oc's on dual core. The stock cooler with your QX will probably give you better results.

also might I point out that with an sli board, you could have gotten two 8800gts in sli that would be faster and cheaper than your single gx2 (unless you are actually contemplating quad sli....)

I'm sure this could easily go to 4GHz with that cooler, if you set the FSB to 2000MHz and maybe a slight bump to the Vcore (at least set it to the rated voltage, and turn auto voltage off). A bit more robust cooler is definitely a must, but you'll probably be better off with something like a Zalman CNPS9700, Tuniq Tower, or TRUE, and save yourself some money (although that doesn't seem to be a concern in your case).

true and tuniq will not fit in that case.

thats why i have the thermalright SI-128 SE (Which lets me go north of 4ghz easily)

It was a OEM CPU so no HSF with it, and got it at a bargin price £450 ($890 USD) my mate went bankrupt there was no buisness in north wales, its also very difficult to get hold of top end parts in the uk at the moment. I am doing as much research as posible so I dont ruin the pc yet, as I said before I will be water cooling it.

It's going to be hard to help you because most people here have a locked multi so the only way they can overclock is to raise the FSB. You have an unlocked multi so you don't need to up the FSB much at all. You also don't need to worry about if your RAM is going to limit it either because your RAM speed is already so high.
I'd try uping the multi a little at a time. See how high you get there. Then when you can't go any higher there then try bumping up the FSB.
Post your results when you get some.
