Antec 900 Optional Fans - Page 2

to put it simply, that fan is useless.

edit: if you could somehow point that fan from the stock cpu cooler at the NB heatsink though i guess it would help......a little. why dont you experiment with it a little and see what happens?

Umm, no... You can buy 120mm fans for $10.

And I don't see how the side fans would be intake... They normally are exhaust for the graphics cards that would be right next to it.

you want the cool air from the side to come in right on to the gpu. air from the front intakes has to travel farther to reach the gpu. having a fan on the side panel blows cool air immediately to the gpu. heat rises so it would be better to have the top and rear fans as exhaust

I would think the side fan would be intake, As Spacegoast said, heat rises and the Big 200 on the top of the case moves a ton of air. There is an option to put another fan at the back of a HDD bay. I wanted controll over them, which you have with the stock fans if you want to open the case everytime you want to adjust them. So I bought four Yate Loons to replace the stock fans and the Sythe Kaze Master to controll them. I put the top one in front in the top bay with the DVD and controller in the middle so I have a straight shot with two intake fans in a row blowing directly at the CPU cooler. Works great. About using a stock cpu cooler fan for anything it was designed to do I think would be futile except if you rig it on your northbridge. Probably way to large to do that.

Hmm, I'll attempt to attach to the northbridge. According to the attached pic, which angle should this stock fan face? In other words, explain the air direction of this fan onto my mobo. e.g. blow air onto the ram; blow air onto my Tuniq(CPU); blow air onto my GPU etc....

well i dont think it would really matter since the heatsink wasnt made for a fan. its a passive cooler and there are really no fins on it to absorb the cool air. and as such it has a small surface area. since it lacks fins it will have a tough time to properly utilize the air blowing on it. but it cant hurt to just point a fan on it. i would try to point it so that the fan is vertical and pointing to the back of the case.

edit: check this old pic of my rig. i have a small clear fan on my NB heatsink (it says Foxconn on it). you can see the red and blue wires on it. well try to mount yours vertically like that. i have mine blowing in to the case only because that is the only way it fit. try to mount yours so it blows toward the back of the case though

This is to clear up the side fan issue debate going on in here. I have a antec 900 and I have my side fan as an intake. Now to put this into perspective for you. Without the side fan in at 30% on the GPU fan, my gfx card stays at 60c at idle.... With the side fan installed and my GPU fan at 30% my card stays at 47c at idle..... I tried cranking the stock GPU fan up to 100% to see what the coolest I can get my card would be, and it only dropped 5c at idle... so I see no point in increasing the GPU fan.

I have not put the side fan as a exhaust, but I think the results would be worse. HTH.
