With a RAID array, you ideally want to have identical harddrives.

Say 2 400GB Seagates

or 2 WD Raptors, etc.

With 2 drives, the most common types are RAID 0 and RAID 1.

RAID 0 - Striping : Combines the Storage of both drives, and thus combines the bandwith of transfer rates. The downside, if you lose a drive, you lose information on both drives.
RAID 1 - Mirrorring : Making your drives redudant and 'mirroring' such that your drives will be 'fail safe' in the event of a hard drive failure. The downside, not as fast as RAID 0. Raid 0 = higher read and write times / seek times. Another thing: It also requires higher disk overhead.. meaning that you need to have more drives say 4, 6 to see higher transfer rates, making it less efficient.

seems a bit complicated, do you think its worth buying another 400GB hd?

The advantages you would see with RAID 0 is such that you'd see almost double the performance over one drive, and almost double the storage.

Sata Drives are so cheap that I think for sure, it's worth paying the ~100 dollars more for another 400GB to do a RAID. Your motherboard manual should explain exactly what the protocol is for doing a RAID. You will obviously have to do a fresh install of your Operating system and you will have to implement RAID drivers upon installation (you should refer to your motherboard manual for this).

Here's a nifty little site that might explain RAID 0 and Raid 1 well:
