AMD K7 surprisingly zippy

hey ocn,

i rma'd my board and was left computerless with one possible solution....

boot up my 2001 computer that has been a substitute coffee table for who knows how long.

my Thoroughbred Athlon XP Socket A system.

1150mhz
512mb PC2700
40GB hdd
Geforce 2 MX 400

what shocks me is that after i cleaned out some old junk and defragged, it runs just as fast as my sig rig for regular browsing and general pc use.

it gives me one overclocking option

to bump the FSB from 100 to 133, essentially taking my Proc to 1530mhz but the psu is very close to crapping out and usually won't boot even at stock settings so it stays at stock.

just thought i'd say how much overkill there is for people who just browse the internet or look at the odd word document, lol

If that board can support AGP 8X, why not upgrade to a nvidia 6800 or something?

it is agp, but if i upped the GFX card, i'd need a new psu as well, and then i would feel like 40gb hdd isint enough, and upgrade that too.....etc

this one's too far gone to just upgrade i think

I was using an XP-2400 as my 24/7 rig up until November when CPU fan crapped out.. my daily driver is now a 4800 X2, great price-point at the time of purchase

(that 2400 is still alive and kicking as a secondary domain controller with a $10 fan replacement)

and its for general use, internet browsing, why bother?

i still got a Barton running 2500+, it over clocks nicely to 2500+ and my sister still uses for msn and watching videos, that sort of stuff. Works perfectly.

Syncmaster, great point made. My machine at work for the longest time was an Athlon XP 2800+. Pretty much all I did on that machine was browse the internet, outlook, run some mstsc windows ect...nothing to serious. Didn't notice a difference between that and my home machine. If I didn't play any PC Games I'd probably still be on my older p3 rig at home
