Safe E8400 volts?

i keep reading mixed reviews about the safe voltages of the e8400. I really want 4.0ghz so i want to know how far i can push this thing without harm or degration.
Any opinions would be good.
I have heard 1.36v 1.45v i dont know what to think anymore!?

The highest Intel spec VID for an E8400 is 1.3625v, if you set this voltage in the BIOS, and have a working vdroop, you should not encounter any voltage related damage/degridation within the warranty period, unless your chip is already a dud.

The oft quoted 1.45v is Intel's absolute maximium limit, meant to represent very short term spikes and such. Again, if you have a quality board and a working voffset and vdroop, you can probably get away with setting close to this number without going past it during spikes.

On one hand, Intel's voltage ratings are often quite conservative. The absolute max rating on the P35 chipset, for example, is 1.35v. I've run my P35 at 1.61-1.65v almost continually for well over half a year with zero hint of trouble.

On the other hand, the 45nm process cannot logically be as durable as others, and is based on somewhat different matierals (halfnium based high-k) than prior processes. Given these unknowns, and reports of degradation/failure at even conservative voltages, many prefer to play it safe.

As it stands, there are virtually no reports of damage/degradation below 1.36v. However, some people have been able to run much higher without problems.

There are some other often overlooked theories/factors that you may want to consider:

1. Voffset and Vdroop exist for a very good reason. Some people who have had their chips die have gone overboard with vdroop mods, exposing their chips to much higher surges than would have otherwise occured.

2. The 45nm chips have very low VTTs, and do not often benefit from high VTT (my E8400 can go to 550+ FSB with 1.1v VTT). Some people who assume vcore has damaged their chips may have actually caused the damage with excessive VTT.

3. There is some evidence that the 45nm chips when run past the spec VID range, but not overly in excess of the rated absolute max voltage, will degrade partially, then stop. I've seen this with my own E8400. After a few days of exceeding known "safe" volts, I need exactly 0.05v more to make the same clocks stable. More than a week later, with even more voltage, higher temperatures, higher clocks, and more stress testing, degradation has not progressed any further, at all.

In the end you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky?

LMAO....well I am not Clint, but I had a similar experience.

I got my E8400 when they first came out, could run 4.1 stable at 1.36v bios, and did so 24/7 for couple months, including a couple hundred hours of stress testing. Did not degrade one bit.

I then started doing some benching at 1.5v, but for very short time (couple hours), saw no degradation, then ran my cpu at 1.412 bios (1.39v cpuz) vcore and 4.2 Ghz. Did fine for some early stress testing and was 12 hours prime stable. Then after about 6 weeks, system started freezing/crashing, and prime was stable only 3 seconds at same settings. May have been a combination of benching then higher 24/7 vcore.

I went back to 1.356 bios and 4 ghz, I need about .05V, more to be stable at each setting as well. But have seen no further degradation. I am not sure if I would get any more degradation if I continue to run above 1.36, but not willing to test it until Nehalem gets close, as I will be upgrading.

Vcore needed for certain Mhz, like on all cpu's, is highly variable.

I have not seen anyone get 4 Ghz on stock voltage, though have seen some around 1.26V, or roughly .04 above VID by some on xtremesystems. 3.8 probably so, but not mine.

Mine would not even post at 4.0 Ghz below 1.28 vcore, and would be very unstable there.

Some unlucky E8400 owners need 1.4+ to get 4 Ghz stable. Just luck of the draw, like in all cpu's.

Currently i am at 1.425 in the attempt to make 4.0ghz stable. I tried the vdroop mod without success. (i used a mechanical pencil and i don't know why, but it did not work)
My volts on cpuz 1.392 under idle and 1.376 under load.
I just failed prime 95 =(
Should i keep trying till i get to the 1.4v area in cpuz or just settle for a lower clock =(

Ive taken mine a hair over 1.37 to reach 4Ghz (not for long periods of time). Seems to be fine and haven't had any degradation yet...

yeah, i am booting into 1.43750 right now...
I don't think this cpu is going to reach 4.0ghz (stable) without dieing first.
I this is the last time i will raise my vcore and i will be lowering my clock..=(

In cpuz it shows 1.40v and 1.387 under load ( i hope this chip can handle this )

well i backed it down to 3.9ghz and im running it 1.40v in bios
1.344v under load 1.36 under idle
