acrylic vs. chemical reaction test (in Progress) - Page 3

Those are some good ideas Indignity. I've actually got some ground copper for mirroring so that should do the trick. Tomorrow, I plan on cutting the test pieces and do some flaming and polishing. I will be finalizing list for chemicals and cleaners. And last I will be building a LED UV light array for testing.

I probably won't have time to test this week so you might not see results till next weekend. I don't mean to string y'all along but I don't want to feel rushed while doing this. So please be patient.

Deegan, I will try and check your kit out tonight, but I would like a picture of your block to compare and contrast against my results.

Now it is time for some TF2.

This will be of much interest to me since a large chunk of my life revolves around acrylic and fabricating it into various objects.

I am particulary interested in your results with xylene, to keep it a blind study I will say not more.

Thanks to Indy for steering me to this thread.

Sorry, I meant to send you a PM but I've been PM'ed a little recently and am new to forums in general when I found this site I was like OMG. I will try and give as much info to make the blind work. PM me if you need more. I want to give cuy50 and maybe CyberDruid a link but I don't know how to yet, too much to do right now. Can you tell my how?

Can you tell me your interest in xylene, I almost omitted it because I didn't see the relevance? Does it have something to do with paint?

Edit> By the way were are you at? You are just a little north of me but way west. Where I fish north and south are more important than east and west. And I LOVE the idea of a blind study tell me no more just ask questions.

The reason I included acetone is to give something to compare and contrast. I'm pretty sure it will be quite destructive. Hell, I might even add H2O for the hell of it.

Thank you for the thought, Gom Jabbar; much appreciated.

As of yet I have avoided any mis-haps with cleaners as I was anal-retentive (insofar as cleaners that met with the acrylic that I was using) right from the starting gun (Indigo).

As or linking threads to other members, You can do so by copying and pasting the URL into a PM (or any post) using the "Insert Link" Button that is found in the message options directly above the window that you type your message in. The "Insert Link" button looks like this:

...oopsies... sorry 'bout the sizing...

As for xylene, I use it to clean TIM and PCB's. Works rather well and has an inherent porperty of evaporating at a very fast rate....

My "20"? ...I am about an hour North of San Franciso. It's really rather beautiful... You?

This is terrible information. Isopropyl alcohol will not damage certain kinds of acrylic, but other kinds it will. I know for a fact that the Swiftech MCRES-Micro is susceptible to isopropyl (at least on the inside), because I have destroyed one using it. Solids had precipitated on the inside of it, so I took a q-tip dabbed in 91% isopropyl alcohol and put it inside to clean off the precipitate.

I cleaned it off and I noticed no ill effects. I turned away to do something else, and a minute later I looked back at the reservoir and the sides of it had all cracked badly.

Here is a youtube video of what it will do to susceptible acrylic:

Now unless Swiftech has made an unannounced change to the kind of acrylic used in the MCRES-Micro, then it is still to be assumed it is susceptible.

This information is not subjective and it is not up in the air. It is objective chemistry:
Swiftech has made, and presumably still makes their MCRES-Micro using an acrylic that is susceptible to isopropyl alcohol.

Deegan, thanks for the picture. Can I get one of the acrylic's edge. It looks awfully thin from that angle. I don't even classify acrylic less than 1/8" in the same category, with the rest. In my experience it is an inferior product, I don't care what my distributors say. It even smells different when cutting just like acrylic mirror which is very brittle.

Syrillian, I'm in Morehead City NC, If you look on a map, I'm centered north south on that little bit that sticks out into the Atlantic. Hurricane season is right around the corner and we draw them to us like a magnet.

003, I have no problem with what you have said but I do have a problem with the way you did it. I'm not trying to ignore anyone. If this is the case then it is not acrylic or an inferior product, which goes back to my first idea in the other thread, that the reservoir is not the high quality product that people are expecting. Please, give any info you have but do it like you know you should. We also have a case example of a Bigwater going nuclear but he didn't blast my thread like you did. Did you read the whole thing? I' m doing a new test because the first one was impromptu. I can see many faults with my first test, which is the reason for this thread. I myself have learned a lot and remembered somethings forgotten. Are you trying to help us learn are do you just want to be right?

Edit> adding CLR to the list
