Major problem w/ artifcats & GFX card

OC’d GFX card (Dell *reference?* 8600GT 256mb) in January, went up to 670, 840 ish. Was fine for two weeks of solid cod4, began to get artefacts so backed down clocks to 630, 800 was fine for months with the very occasional artefact. Got artefacts yesterday, played this morning fine.

Then played in evening, game would “lock up†for about 2 seconds every 10 seconds (screen froze completely (i.e. no change in FPS counter. Originally wondered if drivers had “turned badâ€) then started to get flashes of black and white on screen. Finally Cod4 took on a very green tone (literally as though someone had set RGB to 0, +100, 0) and image quality was very poor (looked like a very high contrast as clouds were made up of large (about 100 per large rain cloud) squares of progressively varying colour.

I am worried that maybe running at high clocks solidly for 2 weeks at original OC damaged the card permanently in some way? (Despite not getting artefacts until playing solid for 3 hours each day for two weeks at original OC) I Guess cheaply made Dell GFX cards, don’t react well to OCing anyway. Warranty replacements are out of the question as it’s OC’d

I tried to record the described graphical issue, but in the panic of screen turning green etc I couldn’t find the right key combination to start FRAPS! (LOL) I did however quit the game immediately, fire up Riva Tuner, returned to default clock speeds and check temps (57 @ 40% fan speed) then played for 10 mins fine.

Now I was planning on buying a 4870 in two weeks and selling the 8600GT… But I would hate to spend £150 “replacing†rather than “upgrading†graphics card. I wonder if installing a new (Corsair TX650w) PSU would help? (Currently have a Delta/Dell 300w generic PSU)

Are there any diagnostic tools I can run to check the health of my GPU?

Vista Premium 32 bit
175.XX nVidia drivers
nForce 430 MCP6100
Athlon X2 5000
3Gb 667 RAM

MANY MANY THANKS FOR ANY HELP!

*by refering to artefacts, i mean (i think they're artefacts :S) snowy dots appearing all over screen, and what looks like lightning comign out of top, bottom and sides of screen. All dots/imperfections come in a mix of RGB

Is the fan and heatsink clean?
I mean none of the fins are clogged with dust or anything?

TBH, i haven't looked. But:

Temps were 57 degrees and fan speed was registering at 40% (what i set it to for 50 - 60 degress)

I've had this PC since October (9 months) and do clean dust out every few weeks. Not that it actually collects dust very well.
