What happens when you boot with no CPU?

This is related to a separate post but I made a new thread to make it easy to find for others.

I was wondering what would happen when you boot with no CPU?

Does the computer boot up but will not output graphics?

Does it output graphics to the monitor, but get stuck on post (obviously)?

But what I'm getting at here, is would you expect graphics to be outputed to the monitor?

If you've ever booted without a cpu installed, please post what happened. Did the fans spin up? did graphics appear? did it shut down itself and reboot? etc.

Thanks for any input in advance. Your help is much appreciated!

The computer will not POST, no graphics will be outputted. Fans/HDs will spin up, but nothing else will happen. BIOS may beep at you.

Depends.

This has been discussed many times. And i think it depends on the motherboard you have it on, or in this case which motherboard you don't have the CPU on

On certain ones you will not get anything, no output or anything. Lights will still come on, and fans will still spin but no signal.

On others you will get a signal, and a message saying 'Warning: no CPU detected'

When I fried my motherboard last year, the representative that I was talking to on the phone told me to remove my CPU and boot it up. Then he asked me did I get any signal on my monitor and was I able to get into the BIOS.

Since the motherboard was dead, there wasn't any signals at all. So, I am guessing I am able to get into the BIOS without my CPU, according to that guy that is.

I have heard both as well, no CPU detected or nothing at all. I believe that the most common occurance would be nothing at all.
