[Nordic] RV770 has 800 SPs, breaks 1.2TFLOPS, final clocks - Page 6

Remember for ATI cards shader processors =/= steam processors (article got that wrong). For ATi cards you divide the Steam Processors by 5(shader processors are arrays of 5 stream processors and 1 branch unit) to get the number of shader processors. The problem is that all these steam processors need to be constantly fed with data. If they can avoid staving them of data then ATI might have some WIN on their hands Also ATI shouldn't have much of a problem with AA now since on ATI cards AA is handled by steam processors and not ROPs like on Nvidia cards. Also if AMD can integrate CUDA onto their current cards (if the FUD was right) they might grab some of the high performance computer market.

QFT. It seems like whenever Nvidia is on top, (some) people treat them like gods and completely forget about the past.

I will admit I've seen pretty many "going ATI next round" posts even from people currently with Nvidia cards (not accusing anyone of being a fanboy). Curious to see how sucessufl RV770 ends up.

Well its not just Nvidia, but a ton of Intel fan boys do the same, but of course AMD has not plans catching up just yet...

ATI with more than 50% of the market share.
AMD's 2.0ghz peforms the same as Intel's 3.6ghz

i miss the good ol' days...

hrm, 1600 shader processors on the 4870x2 kind of puts my 12 pipelines on my 7600gt to shame!

I think ATi/AMD will be keeping the top spot for 3DMark06 wth multiple cards on hwbot for a few more months now!

LoL.... I actually had 2 from launch(most expensive upgrade I ever made) And was extremely happy with them, but the hype surrounding the 48 shaders never seemed to materialize in actual game support for quite a while. Hence the x1950's longevity...... And I can see myself buying into the 4870 hype & buying 2 at launch as well.....

160% the flops of a 3870... wow. (Taking that off the fact a 3870x2 packs 1TFLOP and assuming a 3870 has 500GFLOPS.)

Quote:
I hope they can turn those FLOPS into performance. I don't think Nvidia will be to embarrassed if they have all the game performance.

ATI hype? I guess we will see.
Excellent point, guess we will see the 25th.

CUDA is nVidia's approach and is probably potented, so no way in hell ATI will implement it. ATI on the other hand have it own technology for such things with allows assembler code to be executed on GPUs (instead of C with CUDA). If i remember correctly, it is called CTM "Close To Metal" or something and by the looks it is not so successful, since we heard nothing about it.

From wiki:
"CTM (Close To Metal), AMD/ATI's competing GPGPU technology for AMD FireStream stream processors and FireGL workstation cards"

Do research before you post. CUDA is 100% open source and all companies are free to download it and make it work with their hardware.

Nvidia isn't dumb, if CUDA wasn't open to everyone, no one would adopt it.
And if it does catch on, AMD will make it work on their GPUs, just like they adopted the ATX form factor after Intel introduced it.

not to mention, in raw Gflops counts, the R700s will probably outperform the GTX280s in their own CUDA applications if/when ATI makes drivers for it.
