The specs are in my sig. My budget is around £500. Is there anything I could improve on it?

Cheers

does that include the OS?

And I assume the box only, or is a monitor and keyboard/mouse also included in the budget.

Well - The case power supplies tend to be a little weak as well as the Intel Stock Cooler.

If I could only choose 1 thing...I would swap out that stock CPU cooler for even a basic aftermarket one. Maybe a Thermaltake Hyper TX2. They're like $20 and will work far better then stock.

The whole shebang. So yes monitor and all. It was really hard to find a decent one cheaply. But I did it. Maybe ebay will give me somehing better that will give me some more headroom in the budget.

Yea I think it'd be better to go a little further for my aftermaket cooler (dependant on whether i can afford it) and get the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 instead. Lokks like it gets better results.

My suggestions (all from www.scan.co.uk):
  • Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L, iP35 Express, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 1066/667/800, SATA II, ATX £56.27
  • Coolermaster RC-331 Elite Black/Silver Midi Tower Case w/o PSU £24.66
  • Optiarc/NEC AD 7200S-0B 20xDVD±R, 8xDVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, DVD-RAM x12, SATA, Black, OEM, £15.94
  • 512MB Palit/XVision 9600GT, PCI-E 2.0, Mem1800MHz, DDR3, GPU650MHz, Stream64, 2x DL DVI-I/S-Video £88.70
  • 2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-18 £30.13
  • Intel Pentium Dual-Core, E2180, Socket 775, Allendale Core, 2x2.0 GHz, 1MB Cache, Retail £43.93
  • 450W Corsair VX Series PSU, ATX, PS/2, UK Version, 80 PLUS® certified £44.05
  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1* 64Bit 1Pk OEM (DVD) £62.62
  • 250 GB Seagate ST3250620AS Barracuda 7200.10, SATA 300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.5 ms, NCQ £32.77
  • 19" Hanns-G HN198DP TFT Monitor with DVI 8ms £103.40
  • Microsoft Basic Black Value Pack Optical Mouse & Keyboard Bundle £10.56
Net Total £436.63
Carriage £11.81
V.A.T. £78.48
TOTAL £526.92

It's a little over, but you'll like the 19" monitor.

For now, settle with stock cooling. It's an easy upgrade when you have saved another £25.00 or so.

Oh - You would definately do better getting that - or about 10 other ones....but for the price, It's pretty decent. I think when I bought one back in November - It was like $19.99 with a $10 mail in rebate. For $10 bucks - it worked incredibly well.

If you DON'T have much room left in your budget for anything else...then this would be my only MUST do. You will hate your stock cooler.

I've had nothing but bad luck with stock coolers. I had one pop off (those damn pins), one that ran idle @ 60c, and one that cut the heck out of my finger with a razor sharp fin....but that one did cool ok.

I'd rather get a good core rig up and running, and then later add advanced cooling. He'll be more than happy running stock for a while (it's his brand new rig). I'd rather spend a bit more money for a 19" monitor than in air cooling for the time being.
