Upgrade my headphones

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD202s and they were great. However, I went to the mall today and tried some really nice Bose Headphones and realized how much sound I was missing out on. So I think I will be upgrading them. Budget: $150. I would prefer noise canceling headphones.

Active noise canceling = poor sound quality. You want noise isolating, not canceling, if you want the best sound for your money.

Beyerdynamic DT770s isolate really well, but they color the music in ways some people don't like, very bass heavy.

Audio Technica A700s are closed, and while I'm not a big fan of them, they're very popular.

There's also IEMs to consider, which will isolate/block noise exceptionally well. If you can deal with having things in your ear, I'd definitely consider a nice set.

Take a peek at the Equation Audio RP-21, too, if you want closed cans. They do a great job of bridging the price gap (and I personally thing sound signature gap) between phones like the AKG K81 and the DT770.

I cant find those headphones anywhere on Newegg.
Quick Question:
Is it best to plug the headphones into the master speaker or directly into my X-FI?

Check out FullCompass or Amazon - they both carry them.

Generally, I'd go right into the sound card. There are just too many unknowns with the jacks on speakers.

Is it worth getting an amp for headphones?
That'll depend a lot on what you buy and what your source is. Your X-fi will be able to deliver a lot more current than something like a MP3 player, but for some headphones (like the DT770) you really need a dedicated amplifier to use them at their full potential. The RP-21s are perfectly happy with mid-power sources like a sound card or HT receiver.

Which amp do you think would match up well with a pair of DT770s?

Now you've gone beyond my knowledge - Namrac is our resident fountain of info for all things DT770, though. I'm sure he'll chime in again.
