New Maximus - Can a MB habitually eat RAM?

Thread Starter
I've had my Maximus MB for about two months now.

Within that two months, I've run Q6700 at speeds ranging from 3.5ghz to 3.8ghz, never with VCORE over 1.5v.

My RAM, 1066mhz Mushkin Extreme performance series, has been run at stock speeds and volts for the whole time.

Yet, I've still seen three kits of the same Mushkin ram blown.

My third kit just blew.

Each time, it's the same ... I'll be in some sort of Multitasking Moment(tm) and <WHAM!> BSOD ... and then fried RAM.

This time?

I was simply listening to music while running a backup. And when simultaneously went to reply to a forum thread, <BOOOM> "irg_not_less_than" BSOD ... and upon trying to reboot.

No work.

I isolated the RAM by running to Fry's and getting a cheap kit of Corsair to plug in as a troubleshooting measure and <CLICK!> system booted fine.

I then stuck the Mushkin ram back in and no post.

So again ... my RAM is fried (mind you, third exchanged kit in two months!)...

Is it possible that I've just got some bunk, flaky MB that's got some internal error that's frying my RAM?!!

I mean ...

Does that happen?

It's HIGHLY, highly unlikely that each of these very reputable Mushkin kits have been flawed.

So have any of you heard of a MB having a wierd internal problem/glitch that makes it kill/eat RAM like there's no tomorrow?

...

I'm going back to Directron.com (their warehouse is right down the street) to discuss this with them as all of this equipment is very new still ...

What I'm going to argue is that they should not only give me a new kit of Mushkin (which won't be a problem) but also a new MB to test with it as recent history seems to indicate that my current Maximus board, though seemingly test worthy and running fine, has obviously l got some sort of problem as it's just not mathematically feasible that I should see three blow kits of RAM within two months.

Especially when not running any sort of RAM overclock.

...

Anyway ... please share any knowledge/experiences you can that might help me to understand why my RAM keeps blowing!

Thanks in advance.

my maximus ate 2 sets or tracers and a set of regular ballistix i switched to the reapers and i have been goin strong for a while with them. You know the Maximus over volts the ram so you have to use a program like everest or the likes to monitor the ram voltage, mine for example is set to 1.8 in bios and everest says its at 1.9.

It's quite possible for an incompatable or defective motherboard to destroy components plugged into it.

Easily. Probably happens more than you think.

Had an Asus P5N32-E SLI that had quite an appetite (3 Crucial Ballistix kits and one G.Skill kit).

RMA-ed board, and all is fine

Thanks folks for all the replies.

I thought I was going insane.

Good to here some similar circumstances.

BTW: in my troubleshooting run I also picked up a new P5K Deluxe.

I wasn't leaving anything to chance.

Anyway ... Fry's had it on clearance for 90 dollars!

Is that a good deal or what?

I might just keep it as a back up board instead of returning it as I'd planned.

The maximus overvolts the hell out of ram. I run mine at 2.06 bios to get almost 2.20 real. Naturally, you run your "2.2v" memory and it actually runs 2.35 or even higher.

Great information.

I'm heading to bios now.

BTW: what tool do you use to get the REAL volts for your RAM?

Sweet LAWD!!!

I'd gazillion REP you guys who clued me in to the Maximus RAM overvolt thing if I could!!!

I just checked my RAM volts with Asus PC Probe and it was running at 2.45 volts!!!!

OMG!!

They should put a sticker on the Maximus box or something cause that's just inappropriate!!

I had my Bios set for 2.35v, the max my lovely Mushkin D9 RAM can take, but apparently The Maximus(tm) thought it better to jack it up to over 2.45 volts!

No wonder I've been blowing kit after kit!!!

...

Happy ending = got another kit of Mushkin running now, bios set to 2.20v, PC Probe is reporting 2.30v, ... all is well.

Man ...

Who in the world thought up this Maximus RAM Eating Coo, anyway?
