AMD and ATi are different companies and the distinction has to be made. ATi as such has never let their customers down (apart from the small episode with the HD2900 series). Since the days of the X1900s they have been generally very competitive (and even before with the Radeon 9000 series. I have no reason to believe the HD4870 won't beat the 9800GTX as it is one generation ahead.
