SLI 8800GT or SLI 9600GT or Single 9800GTX?

Thread Starter
Ive got one 8800GT already. Im planning on getting a 24 or 22" monitor, running resolutions of 1900x1200 and 1650x1050 respectively. I want to be able to run stuff at the native res (crysis, 2142, COD4)

My options are
Buy another 8800 and go SLI-$240
Sell this 8800 and get 2 9600GT SLI--$220
Sell 8800 and get single 9800GTX.-$289

Which will give me the most gaming power? I want to keep the price down, so please dont say "well really, dual 9800GTX x2 will be better " etc. I suppose i could look at the ATI series, but seem to me like a bit of a waste of time and money. The less money i spend on this, the more i can spend on a monitor
Also, will 500W of PSU get me through all these setups?

i dont know hey.......

I mean , why not get a single 9800GTX , get custom cooling for it , and take it to 900/1200/2100?

it will probably lose against SLI 8800GT's by about 50%....soo say the 9800 got 30FPS , the 8800GT's will get say 45fps......

BUT , if a game like grid comes out , a single 9800 will win , cos grid aint SLI.....

look at the games you want to play , cos not all games support sli , and saying "all the latest games will support sli" aint true...lots of games will use the dirt engine in the future...etc......

just my 2c

Liked others said, it is 8800GT SLI. If you can budget a bit more, 8800GTS SLI is even better but you already had one GT so get another GT is the best for money and performance.

No, the best price/performance ratio is the 9600GT SLI. The G94 core scales exceptionally well in SLI and nearly 9/10 times beats the 9800GTX (various reviews confirm this).

In Australia at least, the 9600GT is a clear $50 cheaper than the 8800GT and less than half the price of the 9800GTX.

Pure performance wise though, yes the 8800GT SLI is superior.

But they already have a 8800GT and there is no guarantee that they can sell it for the amount they proposed.

The 9800GTX doesn't out preform the 8800GT by more than 10%. It barely beats the 8800GTS which itself barely beat 8800GT.

well i had sli 8600gt back in the day, and it was a "alright" experience, until i upgraded to vista when it was still in the beta nvidia driver stage. That was when i gave up with it. As far as i know, games and drivers have somewhat matured since then though? Right?

Games I play:
Crysis
GTA San Andreas (hehe, its still good)
GTA IV when it comes out
Quake 3 and 4
COD 4
Need for speed series

Yeah, thats about the main ones. But i rekon even in the games that dont support SLI, i will still be pretty well off with 1 nicely OC 8800GT though wouldnt i?
