So I just saw the bong cooler thread.

Something dawned upon my head. Ok you use the shower head to make the water form into tiny droplets and then some of it evaporates. Is this the same concept as when you take a shower? Like when the hot water comes out of the shower head a tiny amount of it evaporates and that is what you see on the mirror? If my theory isn't correct please straighten me out! And that bong cooler is very and I mean very tempting!

yep thats whats going on...kinda. basicly in a bong cooler the smaller the drops are the better they evaporate, when this happens the water gets cold as it looses energy into vapor, the "fog" on the window is vapor recondencing on a cold serface. in a bong its the same thing only you use the fan to cool the small water drops. I am going to build one of these and sudgest it to anyone that wants something fun to do and play with...ive heard of people reaching sub amb temps with them and they use hardly any additives.

I don't know why people call them bongs; they're wet cooling towers, that work on the principle of evaporative cooling (evaporative coolers are used to cool/humidify air with water, while wet cooling towers are for cooling water). Cooling towers can get the water temps down to near ambient wet bulb (saturation vapor) temperatures; if you understand air psychrometrics (and/or know how to read a psychrometric chart) you'll realize that the wet-bulb temps are lower than the dry-bulb temps (what is commonly used when measuring temps)

Well, no, the water concensing on the mirror is not a demonstration of the "bong cooler" concept.

If you put the shower head on as fine a droplet size as you can and feel the diffrerence in water temperature between where the water exits the shower head and just before it hit the floor, that temperature difference is how a bong cooler works. The water cools as it evaporates, so it's cooler after it falls through the air in the shower. So, you see that the water recondensing on the mirror has nothing to do with how a bong cooler works, other than demonstrating that the humidity in the room with the bong cooler in it will skyrocket from all the evaporated water.

You can also see the effect of droplet size on cooling by turning the shower head to as large a droplet size as possible and checking the temps again.

And as stated, you'll have to learn to use a psycrometric chart.

You may want to demonstrate this effect to your GF too..........(;])
