Change the PSU, CPU adn Motherboard for starters.

Get a DFI DK P35-T2RS or P35-DS3L.

Get an E8400 or E7200.

Get a good psu like a Corsair HX520

is the E8500 not worth the extra money over the E8400

even though he wants to overclock eventually (well get somebody else to do it for him)

fletch the E8500 is like extra £60 or something stupid like that for extra .2ghz of cpu power. You can easily overlock the E8400 from stock 3ghz to 3.8ghz, so its complete waste of money going for E8500.

if i was you, id go for the E7200, its like £80 its 2.5ghz 3MB L2 cache, easily overlockerble past 3ghz, and most people say you wont miss the extra 3MB L2 cache you'd get from E800s that much.

Q6600 if you plan on doing lot of video editing, E7200 if you just want fast dual core cpu. That CPu shud last u 2 years, and most people are saying quad cores will be of more use in few years time, so for now if i was you id go for e7200 hands down.

I think the newer DS3L's support 45nm out of the box. Even so laods of people have had no problems with 45nm processors with 'unsupported' BIOS. The usual problem is that the multi isn't read correctly. So the processor will still work in a board with old BIOS its just that it may not work as it should.

he wants to build it himself but he never has before. will he need to buy any other cables incase they dont come with the components?
not sure if i see the list right... if i do then u might have to get another sata cable, because the gigabyte DS3L only comes with 2 sata cables and you have 3 SATA port devices
