Ya, onboard sound is probably to blame for not noticing a difference. While 320 kbps MP3s still sound really good on my Zen, there's just something different about the FLAC, and while I can't put my finger directly on it, it seems like there's a whole new level of clarity in FLAC files. But, Namrac knows his stuff about audio, so listen to him.
When MP3 Compresses, you lose the extreme highs and extreme lows, the lows are mostly unmissed anyway, since most setups just don't go down that low
, but the highs are where you get the "airy", polished sound in the recording. Unfortunately, too many people see the word "subwoofer" and automatically think good, turning bass and treble up to 10.. so I have a feeling that the majority of folks who give FLAC a shot will have no idea of the difference.
