But, Namrac knows his stuff about audio, so listen to him.
When MP3 Compresses, you lose the extreme highs and extreme lows, the lows are mostly unmissed anyway, since most setups just don't go down that low, but the highs are where you get the "airy", polished sound in the recording. Unfortunately, too many people see the word "subwoofer" and automatically think good, turning bass and treble up to 10.. so I have a feeling that the majority of folks who give FLAC a shot will have no idea of the difference.

using programs like EAC allow you to make sure the data coming off the CD is of the highest possible quality. Even some brand new CD's having 'pressing' defects which most encoding programs would happily record without noticing.

Also EAC works incredibly well at getting good sounding recordings from old scratched CD's.

Just converted two of my CD's to FLAC level 4 and couldn't really tell a difference between it and 192kbp/s MP3. I guess I'm just not an audiophile. I can't really justify the 31mb per song size of FLAC, unfortunately so I won't be converting to it again in the future.

What did you listen to it from, speakers or headphones? Also what type as with cheap or low quality you probably won't notice that much of a difference.

Yep the better your headphones + source get you notice the difference alot more

Cheap 20 buck headphones/speakers wont make much difference with loseless files.

Since I plan to get an Auzentech X-Fi prelude or Asus Xonar soon I think I need to look into this FLAC business.

Can someone tell me if these headphones would be good for listening to rock / metal and gaming?
