In terms of your functionality as an OCNer, Rep counts are just another way to measure e-peen.
I respectfully advise that Rep is basically nothing more than a way to acknowledge an OCNer's positive contributions to the community. The real joy, though, really should be the fact that you ARE contributing. Whether it's by fostering a sense of community or by imparting knowledge and experience and studied and intelligent opinions, that's really the whole point of being an OCNer.
Back on topic: One side effect of the rep system that irritates me is sometimes members with little/no REP don't get the help they ask for. My theory is that (I'm assuming here) other members seem to feel that they will get nothing in return being that new members don't understand the REP system and what its purpose is.
For example I've seen quite a few threads in my time here where the poster has a simple problem that is easily explained yet no one bothers to answer because the poster has little to no REP. But the post has been viewed 20 or 30 times.
This forum is and should be a place where anyone can come and get help with a (tech related) problem they may be having or just to discuss tech in general regardless of REP points. This is not a popularity contest as some seem to believe.
I would much rather have people respect me because I'm knowledgeable and helpful than because I have 1337 rep. My
