Reputation abuse is not tolerated - Page 15

ok, i have a question. We had a thread about this a while ago:

http://www.overclock.net/suggestions...quirement.html

Here is my post about it:

Original Post:

First off, I'd like to start off with saying that if you come to overclock.net and register as a member, your reasons for being here should be to help others and to learn and participate in ways that are productive for the community. With that said, it really saddens me to see people come to OCN just to sell and buy things, it's quite disappointing. I can't stand people who join here and start a freebie thread just so that they can get 35 reps and make some cash. So my proposition is this: Make the freebie section requirement the same as for sale and wanted. You must have 35 reps to do a freebie.

My Post:

i actually had a thread closed because i put in there that reps were appreciated. Even though, i specifically stated that reps were not required, nor will they influence the choice of who wins. i do not see what is wrong with someone getting rep for giving away to the community. I could easily sell the stuff somewhere else, but instead since people have helped me on this board, i figured give back to those that have given to me. As you can see I do not just post in the freebie thread just to get some reps, i post wherever I think my knowledge can help. i can understand though, if people only came on here to sell stuff, then that would warrant a change in policy.

From the rep defined thread:

When should Rep be given?
Reputation should be given to members who make posts that are beneficial to the forum and it’s membership. When you give rep, keep in mind that members with a high rep will be perceived as "top members" in the forum. Give rep wisely!
I agree with EVERYTHING that is being said in this thread, about the abuse of the rep system. My only question is in what Admin considers beneficial to the community? I felt that me giving away something contributed to OCN members, therefore being entitled to receive rep (not required, though). I understand that Admins stance was that it was stated in thread "Reps appreciated", but is that so bad? Again, I did not beg, nor make it a requirement that i get rep for the winner to be chosen.

Just to make sure, i think that all the Admins are doing an excellent job, and in no way should this post be construed as criticizing their system, or their decision to close my thread. It is mainly for more knowledge on the subject.

Can't get reps from freebies anymore because people would just give away a nice item in order to get enough rep to post in the FS section. The copperhead freebie that happened a while ago comes to mind, that guy pulled in a ton of rep and only had about 10 posts on the site. So I guess you could say it's to maintain the integrity of that portion of the site.

Thread Starter
When tackling the issue of reps on DogForum, I wrote up an analogy to giving reps on the site in a similar way to saying thanks offline. If someone makes a legitimate effort to help you (or if you find a post in a thread by another member that is helpful), give the poster a rep just as you would say thanks if someone at home, work, or school did something to try to help you. If someone posts ten helpful posts in one thread, you would not give them a rep for each one similar to if you were in a conversation with someone, you wouldn't say thanks every time the other person say something (though hopefully you would be sure to say thanks once or twice over the course of the conversation).

The point of this thread and our governance of the rep system in general is not to look at individual reps and go "hrm...was that post really helpful enough and deserving of a rep?" but rather to eliminate reps that blatantly violate the spirit of the rep system. ANY rep given for the sole reason of getting reps back falls under this categories as do mass reppings, repping of completely ridiculous posts, and a few other things.

A line has to be drawn somewhere on the asking/begging/reminding issue, so to be consistent, the line was long since drawn at simply not mentioning them at all. To have the line anywhere beyond that creates way too much grey area. Going back to the "thanks" analogy, none of us (hopefully) go around with a sign that reads "Remember to say thanks if I help you", "Thank me please!", or "I'll thank you if you thank me", so please treat the rep system in the same way.

i guess. I can understand that point of view. Obviously (look at my posts) i do not just post in the Freebie section just to get rep. But, i guess admin can not make rules that only apply to some.

You gave something away? That isn't helping anyone or being beneficial to the community here.

Writing an FAQ, fixing a bug, posting a review is helpful.

Couldn't agree more. The whole purpose of a web forum is to be a place to come fore advice/moral support and to offer suggestions in a friendly community environment. As i see it, the rep system is a way for members to show their appreciation for posts that that have helped them and/or in some form support the community; members should not be searching for ways to get extra rep.

Having comments such as "remember the rep system" in the sig and/or "will rep+" in the first post can be seen as bribing (i.e. If you help me, I'll rep you); while comments such as "great info, rep+" is a way of more publicly showing your appreciation for for a helpful post. Further, I don't see blurbs about the rep system really helping to remind people of using it; new members should read about it in the TOS when they register, and will likely notice the rep+ button and/or people commenting on having repped a post and (if they don't know what it's all about) find out about it's significance.
